Hi,

I've been trying to get my head around Templot for the past few days and scored a major victory today when I finally cottoned on to how to re-select a template previously placed onto the background without getting a duplicate on top. I have the disadvantage of having used AutoCad and similar packages beforehand, even though it was a long time ago.

Now I'm trying to get to grips with transitions. I've managed to create a transition curve from a straight to a circular curve, although the "start" and "finish" were at the opposite ends to where I expected them. Now I want to create a transition curve at the other end of the circular curve back to a straight. I've read through the tutorials and watched the videos, but I can't find anything on this.

I've placed a straight alongside the end of the curve and have tried to link them with a transition but Templot says it can't but won't say why.

It has to be possible to do this since the big railway puts transitions at both ends of every curve.

Judi

PS, I'm using v0.74b

Hi Judi,

Welcome to Templot Club.

There are several ways to do this, but one of the easiest is:

1. start with the first transition curve template as the current/control.

2. put the peg at the curved end (CTRL-1 if it's plain track).

3. tools > make mirror on peg menu item.

4. CTRL-F5 swing/orbit mouse action (on the 2nd radial centre - click the triangle symbol until it says 2nd transition radius/radial centre), until you have the required amount of middle curve space.

5. CTRL-0 to put the peg at the outer end.

6. F4 mouse action to fill the empty space. Zoom in on the joint and repeat if you want a perfect template boundary. Note that Templot isn't CAD, all templates are discrete items, so it doesn't matter if there is a slight overlap or gap at the boundary. :)

I will make a bit of video showing this method.

See also this video (which makes a 90-degree curve):

p.s. for this sort of stuff I strongly recommend upgrading to 091c. Stick with 074b only while doing the original "track plan" tutorial.

regards,

Martin.

Thanks, Martin, for your quick reply. I was using 074b 'cos that's what was recommended to keep in alignment with the tutorials. The menu structure seems to change radically between versions!

Your curly_corner video makes sense except that I don't have the swing angle setting option in 074b. I was hoping to cut my teeth a little more before trying to upgrade but I guess now is as good a time as ever!

Thanks,

Judi

OK, played a bit more with adjusting lengths and moving transition start points and lengths and I have managed to achieve a 90deg curve with a transition at both ends.

I'm off for a celebratory cup of tea!

Hi Judi,

In 074b see: track > lengths (degrees) ... menu item.

Enjoy your cup of tea! :)

p.s.
I've placed a straight alongside the end of the curve and have tried to link them with a transition but Templot says it can't but won't say why.
If one of the templates in the "make transition" function is already a transition curve template, the usual reason for this message is that you have the peg at the wrong end of it. Templot uses the peg location as a marker to know which end of the existing transition template is to be used in making the new transition.

You can even transition into the existing transition zone if you position the peg accordingly (CTRL-F8 mouse action), but note that in this case you must split the template at the peg and make the boundary at exactly that location.

The "make transition" function is described in this tutorial:

Martin.

Martin,

I tried the "make transition" function as described in the tutorial:

http://www.templot.com/martweb/info_files/make_trans.htm

... but it wouldn't. I'm guessing because the other end of the curve already had a transition in it and you can only have one transition per template?

I enjoyed my tea - in the garden - with a piece of cake!
