... topic: 2460 Station Throat Timbering posted: 16 May 2014 22:20 from: Michael Woolford Since my plan is now finished, other than the turntable and back road, I would like to start work on the timbering. I have looked through a few topics on here to see what I could find out, but I have come to find that it is very much a black art, especially in more complex areas. I am modelling the end of the LMS into Nationalisation and would like some information on their practices when it comes to the alignment of timbers. One of the first things I need to do is choose between square on/equalised timbering. Any info re the correct way of doing things? I have also attached the box file. Thanks in advance. Hi Rob, Here is a re-hash of some stuff I have posted here and elsewhere a few times. I will get all this into the Templot Companion eventually. It is much easier to file a vee after assembling it. Even easier if you use a disc sander. Below shows how a vee can be constructed to any angle matching the template, without needing filing jigs, and finishing with solid metal at the nose. This routine calls aq25offset to create each co-ordinate pair. Note that it doesn't need the angle k for this purpose. A few notes about the code. function aq25offset(xs:extended; var k:extended):extended; That's a funny way of doing it. The offset is returned as a normal function result, but the angle is put in a var parameter supplied by the calling routine. After all these years I honestly can't remember why I did it that way. It would be more usual to return a record type containing both values, or else use var parameters for both. But it works fine, and I tend to ...

It would most likely have to be a diorama "in the style of Dudley" rather than an exact model. Having said all that, I have just managed to get a copy of the British Railways Illustrated edition featuring Dudley, which does have a few better photos of the trackwork on the LNWR side- so I will study this carefully and make any amendments that seem necessary to the Templot plan. ... . I believe that most of the suppliers of RSUs in the UK are/were small businesses or cottage industries. I don't know all the ins and outs of it, but under present EU law for scrap reclamation, makers of domestic electrical equipment now have to be certificated in some way. That costs a lot of money and renders the supplying of items like RSUs completely unprofitable for the levels of turnover and profit involved. I could probably dig up quotes from other lists since I remember the matter being discussed in detail a few months ago, with all the relevant EU detail. And because we are the UK, we will apply the rules to the nth degree. You may also find Martin's explanation of OO-SF to be of interest, before you start building track. You should find that it de-mystifies some of the issues with the choices of gauge, and scale. There is a wealth of advice in this and other Fora. [eg. Scalefour Society; RMweb; EMGS; Finescale modeller's workshop.] Distilled into a few sentences: It has been found helpful to start by deciding which construction standard to use in your selected gauge, and then obtaining a set of the approriate gauges; build some straight track, and get a point kit or two to see how you get on. There are several Wild Swan books on the subject. An Approach to building Finescale Track in 4mm by Iain Rice is highly recommended. You will find descriptions of Track formations and of the various methods, and materials used by expert modellers. Welcome to the club ...

... : 1 Sep 2010 23:20 from: Brian Nicholls Hi All, There are two box files of significance, which represent my first attempt at track design using Templot. The attempt covers a small area of Birmingham New Street Station and is a formation just to the South West of signal box 4 located on the old Midland Railway side of the station. The formation is made up of exit roads from platforms 5& 6, plus exit roads from the old Fish Siddings( I posted a JPEG photograph of this area a few weeks ago, however, do NOT use the photo as background as it is quite distorted due to whatever reason). After several aborted attempts, mainly due to my lack of knowledge and understanding of Templot, and also trying to overlay templates on the partial plan area in some sort of sequence, I eventually came to the conclusion that a new tack was required. I then decided to overlay simple plain track templates on to the plan, putting them as close as possible to the plan roads. Doing this gave me ...
