... topic: 3746 Motorizing those pesky points. posted: 20 Aug 2020 04:45 from: Andrew Barrowman I don't know about you but I'm genetically programmed to spend as little as possible on anything, model railways included, and particularly anything to do with setting the direction of points (turnouts if you prefer). My target is to keep it down to less than $3.00 (call it 2.00 GBP) for each point. That pretty much rules out just about every commercially available option. Sure, servos are cheap, but you can spend lots of money on fancy electronic servo controllers that don't even work all that well and end up spending far more than that. Absent a freely available supply of ex Post Office relays (as previously used by Martin) an alternative is the cheap and cheerful SG90 radio-control servo. Considering how good they are they are incredibly inexpensive. (But they do have a couple of issues which this does address.) If you are happy to accept that all your point servos rotate their horns through something like ...

To be honest, my main motivation for posting is that I have seen lots of things posted (mostly elsewhere) which to me could mislead a beginner, or, whilst they might "work" for one simple point, would not be the best way for anything more complex. I will perhaps also include some "basic stuff" like making vees and filing switches if that is of interest. The problem is not so much compiling the content in the different formats, but delivering it and more importantly updating it in between Templot program versions. For example at present I have a new program version almost ready for release. If I delay it until I have also updated the docs, it could be many months before it gets released. I can't do both at once. If I create PDFs or CHMs now and include them with an immediate release, they will be out-of-date very soon as I work on the updated docs. I had hoped that the EWriter format with content updated from the server was the answer, especially with its ability to integrate directly with the program: "click here to see this happen now". But getting it to appear crisp dpi-aware at a suitable size on everything from a tablet to a widescreen monitor is too much of a headache. It's no good if it appears all fuzzy ...

The WEEE requirements involve the sum of a registration fee of £30 for a non-VAT registered trader, though the returns situation is not quite so clearcut, costwise. What IS clear is that the directive specifically includes "Soldering Equipment". The directive also specifically includes "Electric Trains and Car Racing Sets," items within scope under Toys and Leisure. What is not laid down is a definition of an electric train. Though an official was good enough to admit it was generally aimed at RTR, there is a catch. Sell a kit, no problem. Hi Glen, I have already done so. This is the current list of 0 gauges and scales in TDV: 2_281828_250000000.png I have renamed the 9/32"/ft scale as "US-OLD". The list still includes American 00: 00-NMRA, gauge 0.750", scale 5/32"/ft. I hope that is still ok? ... The running of such wheels on "EM minus 2" pointwork proved to be a big improvement on the alternative BRMSB standard (00-BF) -- not surprising when you do the arithmetic. There was no thought at that time of using "EM minus 2" for RTR stock. RTR was much too coarse at the time, nearly all serious 00 modellers would re-wheel it with Romford if they used any RTR at all. When I was developing Templot I remembered "EM minus 2", so I included it in the gauge list, and gave it the name 00-SF (" 00 special fine"). A few years ago Dave Smith at the Carshalton club discovered it there and asked me about it. He was having trouble getting good running on his club's new layout. Or perhaps I remembered it and steered him towards it -- the actual details should be in the Yahoo message archive. Anyway the upshot was that Dave tried it and discovered that all his modern RTR stock ran on it very well - ...
