... topic: 2416 Can anyone assist?- Small Y diagram posted: 4 Mar 2014 12:34 from: Gordon S I've offered to help a friend on this small diorama, but realised it is beyond my capabilities, so wondered if anyone here would like a challenge. He is building a 7mm 'Ivor the Engine' diorama and would like this small section of track to demo his loco. It will be 7mm coarse scale, but the radii may even be outside the realms of Templot. To be honest it's beyond my own capabilities, so wondered if anyone can assist. The straight should be around 700mm and the radii of the curves to the Y in the region of 300mm. I appreciate just how tight these are but wondered if it could be possible? Here's a couple of pics to show what he requires in track terms. So I would like to build a portfolio of small cameos in case they are needed. With these parts I would like to build a small diorama depicting perhaps a turnout(s) and crossing with plain track along with the apparatus that should be both between (AWS ramps, tiebars, TPWS grids etc)and outside of both rails (Point motors, Ccabinets, trunking etc) I have looked at the sleepers and if I use the ST base plates I may get the cants wrong as it looks like they would be on a downward internal slope, the track clips enclosed are very fine and may hold the rail at the correct angle I may write to Peco and see if they have any info on what both parts are based on. But to add inside slip roads, the crossing angle can't be less than about 1:6, and preferably longer. I would also advice using the longest turnouts you sensibly can and have used some C switches to improve the radii of the diverging track on the inside of the curve. B-6s are all well and good in their place, but not on the inside of a curve. The Double slips are now all straight as you will stand a better chance of building them than the curved ones you had previously. I have sorted out the outside slip for you but have left most of the timber shoving for you to have a go at. It is "as near as dammit" the UK S Scale profile and a lot of us have used Sharman 4mm scale "Manchester" wheels with success on S scale track. I suspect that the problem of using smaller scale tyre profiles for larger scale narrow gauge modelling might be that the tyre will not be wide enough- which might offend the eye, but would give a bit more room for outside motion. Neither is ideal especially when pushing bogie coaches into the platform. ... most welcome Hi Simon, That's looking good. The best solution is not to unstick it from the template, simply trim all round close to the timber ends. But for that to work reliably you need to print on paper thick enough to hold the timber spacings and be left in place under the ballast. I usually suggest 160gsm paper for printed templates, which is almost a thin card. Maybe in 7mm scale you could go even thicker, printer permitting. When sticking the template to the work board, stick it only outside the timbered area, so that after cutting through all round the timber ends it lifts clear. Double-stick tape works well for this. regards, Martin. posted: 5 Jan 2015 20:53 from: Simon Dobson Thx S Parts of Templot Club may not function unless you enable JavaScript (also called Active Scripting) in your browser. Crossovers in transition curves do often require a bit of fiddling about to get the best result. The good news however, is that this isn't one. It is entirely contained within the fixed-radius sections outside the transition zones. So you can simply split it off from the transition curves and make an ordinary curved crossover. I will make you a bit of video shortly, showing that. The inside radius on TL089 is showing as 677mm/ 26.7" which I would regard as too sharp for 00-D0GAF in this location. As it is a loco release crossover it is likely to be used by main-line locomotives. Going slow doesn't really make much difference as to whether they will fit the curve (or look ...
