Presumably you are intending to model that in flat-bottom rail? ... Unlike the other tools, the make tandem function is only a partial aid, it can't really be otherwise. There is still quite a lot to do afterwards, and if you prefer to build a tandem from scratch you can of course do so. I suspect that some experienced Templot users will continue to do that rather than use the auto function. The advantage of a regular V-crossing over generic is that you can fine-tune the lead length by adjusting the crossing entry straight. This allows the timbering to be aligned, which avoids a lot of subsequent timber shoving. p.s. if/when OpenTemplot is released, everyone can have a go at improving the tandem function and/or adding other functions. cheers, Martin. posted: 3 Jun 2018 09:51 from: Phil O Thanks Martin, It was only idle curiosity that I asked. In the event that the starting turnout is part of a crossover, the new 2nd turnout will also have its turnout-road exit set to crossover length (at the same TS centres). This will often leave a gap in the rails in creating or aligning the next template on CTRL-6 (TVJP), or sometimes an overlap. The solution is to delete the 2nd turnout to the control template, and then click geometry> turnout-road exit length> normal menu item. Sorry about that. I'm hoping that when the NLS have completed their 25" coverage they will be making that map available as a tiled API too. But it will be expensive. The 6" maps are not too useful by themselves for track planning, but being GB-wide they do provide a very useful means of scaling non-NLS maps by overlaying transparent and aligning structures such as bridges, churches, etc., (which tend not to move around much). They are directly fastened to the steel bridge beams so it's difficult to adjust alignment and are usually tolerated only where necessary in slow speed areas. Yes, I know there are high-speed exceptions. The long timbers are usually 12" x 12" and sometimes bigger, up to 18" x 18", and the cross timbers- the transoms- are usually around 6" x 6" and are paired with a steel tie rod to strap the whole lot tight to hold the gauge. The transition curve calculations use a lower level of precision than the others (otherwise they would be very slow), so if you have been swapping to and fro between fixed radius curves and transitions it is possible that some discrepancies have built up. Turn the vee round or over to make the second cut. The result is as shown after making two cuts on the sander. If it gets hot stop and dip it in a jar of cold water. If necessary the bulk of the metal can be quickly removed with a coarse file or metal shears before finishing on the sander. The end result is an accurately aligned vee comprised of solid rail at the nose. All that then remains is to fettle the running edges at the tip and blunt back the nose. It's a good idea to take a few thou off the top of the nose so that it dips down slightly below the wing rails. This allows for the coning angle on the wheels as they run off the wing rail onto the nose, producing smoother running. Don't overdo it. N.B. Wear a mask while sanding and wash hands afterwards. For me and many others (such as Templot users, I'm sure), achieving the correct looking curve is very important to present the best results. Being an engineer, a poorly constructed curve always takes the shine off a good model railway. I know the 3CP tool has been proven to produce excellent curvature results. This is also true for the 5 inch gauge railway now completed and considered by many to be probably the best aligned track in the country. 3CP is a simple tool to use, but very complex in design.
