At present we have two ways to see the info for a background template (in addition to the info for the current control template): 1. click on a background template and I information on its menu. I don't use desktop icons, preferring to have all my regularly used programs in the quick launch menu instead (Windows XP in my case). It struck me that when I installed the TDV I would have two identical hard hat icons for both the normal and development versions of Templot with nothing to indicate which was which. That being the case I decided to modify the standard icon to create a red version for the TDV, attached here in a ZIP file. It should be placed in the C:TEMPLOT_DEV folder after being extracted from the ZIP file to a useful place on your PC. To have it show as the TDV icon, right click on the TDV EXE file and select "Properties", then "Change Icon" and browse to the C:TEMPLOT_DEV folder and double click the red icon. ... the corner. One question what is Sketchboard? Sketchboard is a new feature coming in the next Templot pug included in Templot2. It's a separate mini drawing package within Templot, customised to use track plans from the trackpad in a colourful full layout design. For control panels, exhibition guides, web sites, signal box diagrams, wiring diagrams, etc. It doesn't compare with a full graphics drawing package, but on the other hand it is interactively linked to your current track plan design on the pad, so that you can develop both together. Sketchboard is based on a desktop publishing component developed by Nils Haeck in the Netherlands. I have kept it as an independent function, so that Templot users who have no interest in such things can ignore it entirely. If you don't click the Sketchboard button you will never see it. ... first attempt posted: 10 Sep 2008 15:41 from: John Clutterbuck I am slowly getting to grips with Templot. I like the underlying concepts but I feel the user interface is a bit arcane and would benefit from some of the more recent windows technology such as panels for the content (templates, shapes, ruler etc.) and properties. I feel this would be more intuitive for novice users and might allow the command set to be rationalised. However, I also know from long personal experience of GIS/CAD development that such a rework of a software product involves a huge investment of effort during which the core functionality rarely moves forward and may even get broken. Therefore I fully understand if Martin ignores such suggestions. If you ever do consider it I'd be happy to provide my thoughts offline. In ten or fifteen years, max, the lights will go out on railway modelling whatever we do. I started developing Templot 28 years ago in 1979. It was first released 8 years ago in 1999. There is still a long way to go until it is finished (or at least within sight of the finishing post). Progress is now much slower than before because of the time needed to support existing users. Even that is strange term -- in earlier versions they were simply called "curved" crossings. That caused no great problem in the UK, but in the USA and elsewhere there is a mind-set that all crossings are dead straight -- which caused confusion with the simple case where a regular crossing is inserted in a curved main. In all the development of Templot, the biggest single headache has always been the choice of words. I tried countless different options for "the control template" before finally settling on that form. Until very recently it was the "current" template -- which invited confusion with the currently selected stored template, and failed to make clear its unique nature representing the generator output. Another constant bone of contention has been "point", which in the UK is used erroneously by a great many modellers to mean a turnout, but in the ...

Even if I could remember the keyboard shortcuts, many of them simply don't work on Mac/Parallels. This also means most of the crib sheets are of no use. The only recourse is to just use menu commands and I found this so frustrating I had largely given up on Templot. In recent weeks I came across a little programme called AutoHotKey which I used to develop a script to fix key transposition on my Apple keyboard. One thing led to another and I ended up with a script that provides a GUI control panel for common Templot commands. This is the result. It makes no changes whatsoever to the Templot software. All it does is allow common functions to be invoked from a control panel.
