... DoubleCAD is from the makers of TurboCad, and is intended to be a direct replacement for AutoCad LT. I don't know AutoCad and I'm very happy with TurboCad. But if you know AutoCad and want a free program using the same interface for use with Templot's exported DXF files, DoubleCAD looks to be ideal. regards, Martin. posted: 11 Oct 2009 14:59 from: Jonathan Wells A couple of days ago I downloaded and installed the free version of Google Sketchup which is version 7.1 and discovered that it DOES NOT import or export DXF files!! ... 41 from: Paul Hamilton Hi all, Just a query really. I have a track plan that a friend did for me in XtrkCAD. I don't have this program but I do have a pdf of it. As such, I was wondering on the best approach to take this plan and create my layout in Templot. I am assuming that Templot will give me the advantage of fitting turnouts to curves etc that XtrkCAD couldn't do because it was using Peco Stremaline templates to create the track in the first place. Should I import the plan in as a back ground image (I see plenty of help on this particular topic around the forum so I am not asking for assistance on this aspect- yet!) and then overlay templot EM track work to suit the general "feel" of the plan or is there a better way? I do have C. Freezer's original track plan image too however it had to be compressed by 6" in one direction and 12" in another direction so it would not be simply a case of laying over ...

Nigel is of course quite correct in his answer it is a matter of context. The generel sense of the replies you have received here is to stay with "irregular" and this is my vote. However if it bothers you I suggest you don't waste any time on this, call it what you like. When I imported the dxf file into Templot it was the right scale but something weird happend to the file when it was imported as can be seen in the Eardisley JPG when in fact it should looked like 3.JPG. Locomotives and rolling stock are so much more accurate that they were even ten years ago? So why haven't available track components reflected this improvement? Folk still create trackwork by building individual turnouts and 'stitch' them together with plain track using 'one size fits all' generic track templates. Surely we can do better than this? Well we have and as from the new year, a new era in track construction begins. Boat and aircraft kit manufacturers use lasers to cut components with amazing accuracy- as do model railway kit manufacturers in the US. It doesn't seem to happen here. But we are going to change all that. So for the past month I have been taking prototype track ...

I wanted an overview of my track plan and track-work combined so that I could import that into Autocad in order to modify a copy of the original station layout. It all appeared to work quite well, except that I found the top area of my track plan had been cut off (see attached files for clarity). The first image is what I actually wanted, and the second image is what was generated by the TDV. Now I adjusted the width dots from the default 4000 to 10050 to get the whole thing in view. However, there is no adjustment for the height of the image, what do I need to do to get the whole image I require.
