... it's a massive task -- I suspect those who keep asking for it have no idea what they are actually requesting. Several months work at least. I purchased an XML component with the hope that it would simplify the task, but so far "simplify" isn't the word which comes to mind. Personally speaking, I have no idea why it's so important to some users. I have been using Templot in its present form for over 10 years now without feeling any great need to save preferences. It takes only a few clicks at the start of a session to set things up how you want them, and often that's not the same as you wanted them before. Perhaps it is knowing how much work it would involve that makes me happier than most to accept the status quo. My inclination is to work on new track functionality rather than saving a few clicks here or there, but I know I shall have to do something about it soon. regards, Martin. posted: 22 Dec 2008 23:56 from: Howard Martin Wynne ...

... from: Martin Wynne Yes, I know, I'm my own worst enemy. But it's near impossible to watch folks getting a bit stuck and not chip in with some help. Here's a very scruffy video. curly_corner_short.png The yellow templates represent the rest of the track plan. The starting templates are straight, but everything would work the same way if they were gently curved, to the same or differing radii. 1. Choose the radius for the finished centre curve. Here I made it 3000mm. 2. Add on a few mm for the transition offset (shift). I allowed 5mm, making 3005mm. 3. Make that the second radius of a zero-length transition and move it along into tangency with the other track. You don't have to be too fussy to get it spot on, unless it's essential that the finished curve is exactly symmetrical. (A few mm difference in the two final transition zone lengths wouldn't notice.) 4. Put the notch on the radial centre for this 3005mm curve. 5. Create your 3000mm ...

The canal will flow front to back under the tracks with several holes in the upper level for light to shine down to the canal level. Where the canal meets the backscene I'm planning on cutting a hole in the backscene and covering the wood cut with a pipe bridge which will enter/exit from the grass embankments at the back. There are a few scenic diagrams and a hand drawn image which may help you see the layout in better detail than just looking at the templot plan, but the templot plan is posted below for you to have a look over. At the moment I'm trying to identify what the slips actually were. From what few pictures I can find on the Internet, the slips look like normal slips but a BR plan of the station (attached) that I found shows the slips to be Barry slips. It appears that the track at the station was modified quite a lot over the years so it could be that the Barry slips existed at one time, to be replaced by "proper" slips at a later date. I'll also dig out my 1963 Constructors which has a series on the I.o.W railways. Jim. A few points: The real place is pretty straight through the station but to create sufficient space for the bay platform I have put in a transition curve after the curviform turnout from the mainline The yard is much shorter than in reality for the later yard with just two sidings. It is closer in length to the original yard with 3 sidings where one siding faced in the other (southerly) direction, like a headshunt?, towards the hamlet. The layout is limited to 600mm in length but the plan is more than 600mm long. The ends will protrude into the off stage area. I've left them a bit raggedy as that can be cleared up 'on-site'. I must admit that I don't often use the "Make" function and in fact had to remind myself what it does- what a useful tool! Anyway, the trick worked. What I did notice when shortening the main road was that timbers remain. Is that intentional? Mulling it over, it probably is as there have been a few cases when I've wanted to shorten the rails without changing the overall length or losing timbers. I just need to remember that that function is there! Any excess timbers can be omitted anyway. Regarding the check rails on the turnout side, from a user interface point of view I was just expecting the check rails to be able to extend as far as the visible rails. Now I know how to work around this, it isn't a big issue, but it would be nice not to have the labels disappear! Cheers ...
