... topic: 3017 Constructing Turnouts on Templot Drawings posted: 22 Apr 2017 11:17 from: leswaters Hello Thanks to this forum I have had a breakthrough this week on getting large Templot drawings printed by a commercial printer. My project is a large garden railway in O gauge where there are some complex crossings. All the drawings have been completed in Templot and I am currently working in my garden shed where an eight road fiddleyard is required. My concerns are as follows. Up to now I have built turnouts on melamine boards where I have used spray on photo mount adhesive to stick the Templot drawing down. Then I use double sided sellotape to hold the sleepers in place. Finally, the chairs and rail are installed. When completed I carefully lift the whole assembly off the double sided tape. This works well for single points but when I come to build larger crossing, say a double scissors, I would prefer to build the assembly in situ on the baseboard. However, with the layout being exposed to the elements I am concerned about ...

Bridge and small chairs for when rails converge, check chairs, common and obtuse crossing chairs, slip and additional switch chairs all make up a range which saves chopping chairs In 7 mm scale sadly from C&L and Exactoscale there are only the standard, slide and bridge chairs available, another range is slowly being created in 3D printing via Shapeways, I have been of a mind to buy some but always have held back, mainly due to cost. They are no 5-minute tasks. Or just leave the existing open source where it is for anyone who wants it and otherwise forget it? There is also the question of open sourcing my more recent work on Templot2. I am in the middle of a big update to the DXF exports for the 3D rendering and possible 3D printing of bullhead chairing. The code for that will need a lot of explanation and commenting to make it sensible for others to read, and I have not yet done a user interface for all the many settings or any user help notes. The only issue being the pivot point should be at the fishplate, but it may work. The other idea, since I've just fitted my Ender 3 with a 0.2mm nozzle( it's a fantastic printer for $150 folks!), is to print a" loose heeled" sleeper with appropriate chairs, 4mm chairs in 3D are a challange though. No concrete ideas yet Martin could 3D help here? I also have to make two GWR profile single slips( or compounds as the gwr called them) in 7mm, that should be fun!, I presume these are also joggles and straight cut switches here too Great thread, we need to rescue the forum from all the hill walkers, good NSWF hardcore track stuff Dave. You can either design full size track* in Templot (set a custom scale as 1:1 ), or work in model sizes (S4/P4) in Templot and convert to full size on exporting the DXF, as you asked. To do that: dxf_scaling.png Extract from the help text: "If the scaled box is ticked, the DXF data will be scaled in accordance with the current print> enlarge/reduce size> menu setting." print_any_size.png The scale for 4mm/ft is 1:76.2, so to convert S4/P4 to full size, set the print scaling to 7620% (yes really), but I advise against trying to actually print at that size! Just use the setting to create the DXF file: print_7620.png *But you mustn't use Templot for laying actual full-size railway track -- see the licence terms. Display it using the Adobe Reader or Foxit Reader or Nitro Reader, and then do a screen capture as a Windows bitmap. On a PC that simply means pressing the Print Screen key to put it on the clipboard, but I don't know if you have such a key on the Mac. This approach means that any design constraints introduced by using commercial track in XTrkCad are going to influence your design, whereas working over the original CJF design gives you the full flexibility of Templot adjustments and curving. But you may be unwilling to discard your friend's design work. 3. XTrkCad can export DXF files, which can be imported directly into Templot's background shapes as a design guide. This has the ...

So in 2013 all the PW track drawings were first cleaned and scanned again, this time using very high resolution and 8 or 16 bit grey scale depth, making the images much better quality, so much so, that it meant they could be used in the production of two books that were produced in 2013 though not actually published until early 2014. The books, are printed at A3 landscape size, which it was found was the smallest size that would guarantee all information and detail within the drawings was fully readable, since the original drawings were the equivalent of just over A1 size (or the nearest imperial size thereof). The quality of the resulting books is indeed excellent.
