I'll still perservere because it's been quite instructive in the geometry of the turnouts and the interaction between the switch settings and crossing. ... "pad bunching" in places which makes more sense. In the early days I referred to the trackpad as the Templot "drawing paper". Essentially it allows you to zoom in and see both ends of a long template at the same time, on a narrow screen, by bunching up the centre part of the grid into a narrow band: 2_152231_450000000.png This can be useful, for example when adjusting a transition curve. You might want to make adjustments at one end of the template, while watching the effect on the alignment at the far end, maybe 6ft away. The mouse action works in both directions simultaneously. Moving left to right controls the width of trackpad which is bunched up into the middle band. Moving the mouse up and down controls the amount of vertical shear in the band, so that both ends of an angled template can be on the screen. Paper bunching has no effect on the finished track design or printed templates, it is purely a change in the way it is displayed on the screen. Before the mouse action ...

North Eastern Railway 1 in 10 Sleepered Single Junction with 17ft-6in Spring Switch (NER 1:10 turnout with flexible switch and interlaced sleepers) The NER switches are a simple design of straight switch -- see straight switch. The loose-heel and flexible designs are interchangeable, using identical geometry. The planing for both is undercut, requiring no joggle in the stock rail. The most interesting and distinctive feature of NER switches is that the switch points (blade tips, switch toe) are aligned to the centre-line of the first switch timber (S1). It would be worth taking some trouble to model that correctly. (On most other switches the points overlap the centre-line, for example in REA switches the overlap is 3.1/2" .) Regrettably this feature has exposed a small bug in Templot (which I thought I had fixed in 091b). Entering a zero for this dimension prevents the remaining timber spacings from being entered. Hi John, During renewal work, chair screws are not fully tightened until everything is in place and checked for alignment. To ensure no screws are missed, I believe each chair screw is given a dab of white paint when it is finally tightened down. The relaying inspector can then easily check that all the chair screws are tight before passing the work. The presence of the paint also reminds the gang in the coming weeks that the screws are new and may need further tightening as the track beds in. The presence of p.w. workers on the track in the picture tends to confirm such activity. Also the track beyond the rail ...

... in a complete mess, but I'm doing my best to get it sorted out. 3-way tandem turnouts are not for beginners. Most of what you need to know is explained on this page: http://templot.com/companion/3_way_tandem_turnouts.php Tandems are comprised of multiple partial templates, so you can't treat them as a single template. If you want to roam a tandem, ideally you should do that first on the starting turnout, and then create the tandem in it's final position. You can however move and align a tandem as a unit, by grouping its component templates and then using the notch-linking functions. The prefix tag allows for easy grouping. To add a branch track, return curve, crossover, etc., to a tandem, first click on one of the two underlying turnout templates, as required. If it's difficult to click the right one, hold down the SHIFT key and then click on the name labels instead of the track, until you get the right one. 1. Delete it the control ...

You need to adjust the radius of one or the other or both of the templates until the track centre-lines do not quite intersect, like this: 2_040956_150000000.png Sometimes it is necessary to temporarily extend the length of the templates to see this. The length of the resulting transition zone is determined by the size of the gap you leave between them. This is the result of the above: 2_040956_160000001.png It now needs to be extended to fit the previous space -- more info at: http://templot.com/companion/link_existing.php ...

... is likely to be worse during the winter months because of the generally damper atmosphere. Paper stored somewhere warm and dry for a few weeks and then kept in a sealed container should work better. For a single template the precision you are getting is perfectly adequate, because as you say all actual track construction is done using gauge tools. The problem arises when you have a large plan comprising several sheets in several rows and you want to fit them accurately together. Odd half-millimetres can add up and throw things out of alignment. As an alternative to the "official" means of calibrating the printer, you could try printing templates with a 50mm grid and measuring the grid lines. You can then enter the calibration factors by trial and error until you get the best average grid spacings across the full sheet. Generally I recommend using an ink-jet printer rather than a laser printer to get the best accuracy. regards, Martin. posted: 10 Mar 2008 17:24 from: Brian Tulley Martin Wynne wrote: Generally I recommend using an ...
