... enlighten me, I'm in need of a good head twist, because my head is clearly not screwed on correctly to understand all this. This isn't a 'being from across the pond' problem, is it? Hi Jerry, It threw me a bit at first too. If you think of it as "the currently active for editing template" or the "active template" it should become clear. I'm sure Martin will have a much better explanation. Cheers (from sunny Idaho), Andy posted: 29 Sep 2020 08:32 from: Martin Wynne Hi Jerry, Read this page for an explanation: http://templot.com/companion/origins_intent.php In the early days of Templot there was a long discussion in the old email group* about a suitable name for the control template. If you find some early web pages you will see it as the "current template" there. But that was causing confusion with the currently selected background template. In theory it doesn't have to be zero-length, but I think it extremely unlikely that the designer would have used a mathematical transition curve in such a position. ... topic: 18 curved crossings posted: 20 May 2007 08:24 from: Trevor Schofield It would be really good if it were possible to make a curved crossing by just overlaying two pieces of plain track at the required angle and then pressing a function button to convert them to a crossing. I've been finding that in making half crossings and converting them to full crossings that the "entry angle" is different from the "exit angle" and so has to be adjused. When the angle of crossing is getting towards 1:2.5 or so, then the curves do not match to produce a smooth passage through the crossing. I am guessing they would not have been used in faster main line settings or in more recent times. "British Railway Track" does mention the use of these shorter 9 inch fishplates and comments that 4 bolt fishplates were the best option. Here is a poor quality pic( of GWR origin?) 2001_111830_180000000.jpg Should we be putting these on a few lightly used sidings? Rob posted: 12 Oct 2020 00:08 from: Matt M. Hi Rob. These were popular pre WW2. The Idea is they leave a shorter unsupported length of rail at the ends of the panels. This was supposed to counteract dip which is an issue at rail joins which collect excessive wear and damage as the wheels pass over. Yes they were seen on main lines.
