... topic: 1917 Help needed with Tandem posted: 10 Apr 2012 07:50 from: its_all_downhill Hi all, I have been happily using Templot for some time now and have managed to become relatively proficient with it at least to my needs, but I still have one stumbling block that has gotten the better of me at every attempt! Tandems.... So this Easter weekend I set out to overcome this problem. Setting up 2 laptops so that I could view on one and do on the other, following the tandem video that Martin created. I even wrote out the steps from the video so that I could see each command before using it. I have attached my box file for your perusal and have managed to get as far as placing the third crossing on the the k crossing. Please excuse the ignorance of technical terminology as I have so far happily used Templot in blissful prototypical ignorance. Couple of points that may help me to understand the makeup of the tandem is.. is the creation of the 3rd x-ing ...

Not bad for someone who usually can't be bothered to read instructions. I can retrieve it from Templot_Dev OK but the graph lines are no longer superimposed? What have I overlooked? My previous attempt was about 85% finished over eight years ago with hand built track and all buildings completed. I found out several months later when briefly returning from a terminal matrimonial dispute that it had been thrown out. Two years work went up the creek. Luckily, rolling stock and most of the buildings came to me unharmed. Being of bloody-minded bent, I am now ready to start again. The top left point is the only 'conventional' one. The others are curved (some only very slightly) one way or the other but I successfully adapted C&L plans to the desired configuration. ...

Looking at your screenshot, it seems that you may be looking for a much shorter crossing than that. In which case you would need to create it manually using multiple partial templates. You also need some detailed prototype data, because there is nothing standard about short-angle crossings, they vary by company, period and location. They should be fractionally above the level of the vee nose to allow for the coning angle on the wheels, but that is done by removing metal from the vee top** (3 /16" at the tip, running out in 15"). See the section through the knuckle in this diagram of an REA bullhead crossing: 2_050420_590000000.png On GWR crossings, the knuckle radius matches the crossing angle in feet. So a 1:10 crossing has a 10ft radius at the knuckle, and so on. On REA crossings (diagram above) the knuckle gap is specified instead, and the rail is curved to a knuckle radius accordingly. For a 1:10 crossing, the knuckle gap is 2.5/32" (i.e. the knuckle gap is wider than the normal flangeway gap of 1.3/4 "). Here's a pic showing an almost as-new bullhead crossing.
