Hi Roger, A DXF file (any DXF file, not only from Templot) can be imported into the background shapes. If it's from Templot you can let it print as usable templates as it stands, or use it as a guide to align new templates over it. 2_170817_410000000.png Note however that Templot is restricted to a maximum of 32,000 background shapes. A large track plan in DXF is likely to exceed this. You may wish to edit the DXF in a CAD program to remove some of the detail, such as say timber centre-lines, etc., before importing it. Another way of dealing with the maximum import limit is to zoom the trackpad to the area ...

Tried again without including the video, PDF preview and Print Preview folders and the file size is still 9.6MB( just under the quoted limit). Added this compressed file to another message all all appears fine and I can see the attachment. I quickly found that I needed to cut the rail length in half, to position the joiners right, as staggered. I will give the tutorial a good study, starting tonight. Most of my work so far, has been, to get to know how to develop patterns for future track work. I have all ready printed out a five degree double track curve for about a 45 deg. change of direction. I copy track plans from magazine articles and size them up to decent minimum radii, and draw track over those backgrounds. What fun? All for practice. As Paul mentioned there are two starter videos, and a long list of tutorial videos on the Templot web site. Before starting on your Barnstaple Junction plan I would suggest simply playing about with individual turnouts in the control template. Curving them; extending them; shortening them; trying different combinations of switch and crossing sizes; printing them out. That way you will have a much better understanding of what is and isn't possible and the options available to you, when you start laying out your plan for real. This first starter video shows how to make basic adjustments to a single template: http://www.templot.com/martweb/videos/flash/startup/startup_em.html I have a project in mind that looks a little like the west end of Barnstaple Junction at one end and some complex pointwork at the other. The two combned make it easy for neophytes like myself, to better understand Templot and to produce excellent templates. I must admit though that I found it difficult to follow the 'loop' in the text instructions due to lack of space on a 15" screen and so many times unwittingly missed a line (or two!). In the end I re-wrote the instructions in full, omitting the 'loop' and printed them out. Bingo! Now the video is easy to understand and great templates the norm. That original layout is now in a cupboard in the Falkirk Museum, and it might be possible to rescue some of the buildings from it. Heresy! The three way into the yard is actually two overlapping turnouts and I remember I got them in the wrong order when I built it. When building something like your crossing between the fiddle yards, I would just print the Templot plan with the two pieces of plain track crossing each other. The time to worry about check rails, wing rails etc is when you're building the track. Some people get their knickers in a twist about getting the Templot plan just right. It's only an aid to tracklaying, and there's no point in spending time with Templot when you could be spending the time laying real track. More heresy! (don't tell Martin I said that!) I notice that most of the main line pointwork under the footbridge area has FB switches and machined check flares. Presumably you are intending to model that in flat-bottom rail? If you change to real> rails> head and foot (flat-bottom rails), you won't see anything different on the screen, but when printed the rails will have the foot lines on the templates. Which makes it a lot easier to align FB rail over the template.
