... topic: 2510 Problem with Printing a Track Plan in Diagram Mode. posted: 18 Aug 2014 13:00 from: David Yates I recently posted a request for help in creating a 3 way tandem turnout for my layout 'Staircliffe Exchange Sidings'. Brian Nicholls of this parish successfully came to my aid and produced exactly what I required. Using the revised track plan I set about creating a mimic diagram of the layout in 'diagram mode'. Unfortunately every time I print the diagram it omits the 3 way tandem turnout. Obviously I'm doing something wrong, but in spite of experimenting and changing various settings I still get an incomplete track plan. What's even more confusing, is that if I print the page map it prints the complete layout, including the 3 way tandem turnout! What am I doing wrong? I have a plan in mind which involves two tandem points. I downloaded the help video and followed it through. The attached template is my second attempt as the first was a bit squashed together. I was wondering if anyone had a spare few minutes to have a look at it and tell me if it would work if I built it. To my eye it looks good but I'm no track expert. Obviously some of the check rails will be built as one piece instead of individual lengths of rail. Hi Dave, The problem there is that tandem turnouts are probably the most difficult to design because so many inter-related factors have to be taken into account. Actually within Templot it is quite straightforward, the complexity is in the initial prototype design to create a viable arrangement. I can easily make a tutorial to create a specific size of tandem, but it won't necessarily apply to any other size of tandem. Something may have to be changed, or moved, or done differently. You then get a write-up containing so many ifs and buts and on ...

... intersecting tracks (one straight, one curved), selected the appropriate make diamond crossing tool, and it worked a treat, with all the check and wing rails apparently in the right places. What I'm trying to draw is a variation on the GER's infamous, and bizarre, construction at Braintree, but the opposite hand- it's a turnout into a passing loop, but left-handed instead of right-handed as at Braintree, with another turnout on the left (into a goods yard), so it's essentially a tandem with the two turnouts both on the left but in the "wrong" order, therefore the second exit road re-crosses the first one. I think the point of the arrangement is that the yard entry is now trailing not facing, so it saves an FPL. I suspect the reason the "make diamond" tool doesn't work is that the diamond is incomplete, there are two K-crossings but only one V. The attached .box should show you what I mean- I've drawn it with all sleepers omitted ...

... topic: 3335 Bug in the double-sided tandems posted: 1 Oct 2018 12:03 from: Martin Wynne I have found a bug in the double-sided tandems -- tools> make 3-way tandem turnout> make double-sided tandem menu items. In the event that the starting turnout is part of a crossover, the new 2nd turnout will also have its turnout-road exit set to crossover length (at the same TS centres). This will often leave a gap in the rails in creating or aligning the next template on CTRL-6 (TVJP), or sometimes an overlap. The solution is to delete the 2nd turnout to the control template, and then click geometry> turnout-road exit length> normal menu item. Sorry about that. I will get it fixed in the next Templot2 update. Users of OpenTemplot or TemplotMEC might like to have a go at fixing it themselves. cheers, Martin. At the moment I'm trying to identify what the slips actually were. From what few pictures I can find on the Internet, the slips look like normal slips but a BR plan of the station (attached) that I found shows the slips to be Barry slips. It appears that the track at the station was modified quite a lot over the years so it could be that the Barry slips existed at one time, to be replaced by "proper" slips at a later date. ... would be the best way of incorporating two crossovers into the transition s-curves to complete the run-round loop Hi Scott, Can you say the scale and gauge? And the overall size? From the track spacing in the loop and 1ft (?) squares it seems to be about 7mm scale, but the platform is narrow even at 4mm scale. Is the short track at the back of the platform a passenger line? I think it affects the geometry of the loop. If yes, it's likely that the tandem turnout is double-sided with the middle route as the main road. If the track behind the platform is a goods siding, it's more likely that the tandem is single-sided with the right-hand route as the main road. As usual with sketched track plans, drawing the track as a centre-line only instead of the actual rails can be very misleading about the amount of space available. To allow for vehicle end and centre throw between templates 11 and 12 they should be at 53mm centres for 1067mm radius and between templates 28, 30 and 40 they should be at 49mm centres for 2085mm radius. I know from photos what the geometry of all the main components of a tandem/ crossover are, but these just will not fit into the space on the OS map, which shows just 6ft between the lines. The OS maps also variably show either a type 2 tandem or series of turnouts or omit them altogether. Noting Martin's comments from the video, in this case I know the switch markers are not accurate. Photos suggest that the spacing is greater than 6ft and I wonder if the cartographer assigned to this area got bored or just assumed this would be 6ft as per the rest.
