... 98% done but.... posted: 11 Jul 2009 13:18 from: BruceNordstrand Hi all I finally sat down with Templot long enough to try the software "in anger" which resulted in the attached plan. I have to revert to my older plan again due to my lovely wife taking up duathlon racing requiring part of my garage to become a racing bike storage and maintenance area. I have no idea if I did this correctly but it turned out pretty much like I wanted it, that is to print full size and build my turnouts in place without the need to standard templates. A couple of the turnouts have slight curves and others are "inbetween" sizes (ie not #5, #6 etc)- BTW, I model US track hence the numbers. Attached to this message is an image of the plan in Templot. The 2% that I am not happy with is the two turnouts in the lower left corner at the end of the coke ovens. These 2 are somewhat intertwined with the LH turnout ...

That gets you the basic diamond-crossing, all nicely curved and aligned, with just a couple of clicks. Then carry on with F4 to extend the tracks, split them off, insert another turnout, whatever. Then at a later date, preferably when you are sure that you aren't going to change the design, you can come back to the diamond-crossing, add in the slip roads, and print out the double-slip construction template -- unique to this specific location in the track plan. Of course, if you prefer to copy or use an existing double-slip you can, but unless it's dead straight like the one I prepared for you, it's unlikely to fit anywhere else. To use the one I prepared, first put it all in a group by clicking the group-selection fence tool-button at the top of the pad (black square below a dotted corner symbol, it goes green ...

But Inkscape is more artistic drawing package than a CAD. For Inkscape and similar programs you would do better to export an EMF or WMF metafile (EMF for preference) from Templot rather than DXF, and import that. That's at output> export a file... menu item. You can use all the printing settings in the output menu to control what's in the EMF file. And also the generator of course. Print out your plan at a small scale and simply run a ruler over it, then scale up the measurements. It doesn't need to be exact, just make sure you err on the high side. ... apart. Otherwise it will be impossible to get the other rails to align properly to gauge. The distance between the vees varies with the track gauge, so you must use a template prepared for the actual gauge you are using. It's no good building an EM diamond-crossing on a P4 template, or a 00-SF diamond-crossing on a 00-BF template. You can get away with that sort of thing for single turnouts, but it won't work for diamond-crossings and slips. Also, if printing the template from Templot, it's a good idea to do a printer calibration first. cheers, Martin. posted: 28 Jun 2020 13:54 from: Tony W I would also add that obtuse crossings is one area where gauge widening is strictly prohibited. Worth checking you have a track gauge that is exactly right. Even if there is curvature through the diamond, the obtuse crossings must be to gauge. The background shapes functions are really quite primitive and not intended to be a full mini-CAD system. One way to represent other shapes is to use dummy templates with shoved timbers, like this: hatched_timbers.png Bear in mind that the timber infill style must be changed to hatched separately for the pad on the screen and for the printed output, and it applies to all the timbers, including those in the track.
