... Calculator available to use in the Sketchboard mode as it is a bit of a pain to keep going back to Templot, Tools, ETC. every time I want to check dimensions. Many thanks in advance Phil posted: 25 Feb 2012 16:08 from: Martin Wynne Hi Phil, The metric calculator should remain visible in front of the sketchboard if you don't close it. You can drag it mostly off-screen if it's in the way. If you click the small up-arrow in the top left corner a few times it will scale down to a smaller size and be less obtrusive. However, I have now added a menu item on the sketchboard menus to display it when needed: options> metric/scale calculator menu item. In the next TDV update. regards, Martin. posted: 25 Feb 2012 16:46 from: Phil O Many Thanks Martin. I had a (very!) vague recollection of having read something about this issue. It must have been a few months back that I looked at the change log when I first used TDV and hadn't used Sketchboard at that time, so "Diagram-mode" and its significance obviously hadn't registered with me. I'd already worked out by trial and error that it had something to do with stock rails and your suggestion of using temporary templates to produce the required diagram in Sketchboard is a simple solution. As with so many things, it's obvious when it's pointed out... by someone who knows what they're doing I must go back ...

It's independant of the default browser setting. After a few hours things return to normal. My intention, once I have all these in proportion on the Templot plan is to create some curves to fold it all in on itself. If its any solace I am known for trying things that others realise is very difficult or even impossible. I seem to achieve my objective in about 20% of cases. ... 34 from: Nigel Brown The use of crossings close to the turntable edge is quite interesting, and led to the downfall of at least one CME. F.G.Smith was CME of the Highland Railway from 1911 to 1915. His "River" class of 4-6 -0 mainline locomotives is often quoted as the reason for his dismissal; the Civil Engineer refused to allow them on the line, due to exceeding the then allowed loading. However, the LMS brought them back to the line with only very minor strengthening of a few bridges. Another, deeper, reason given for his dismissal was his habit of ordering things with little or no discussion with his colleagues (the underlying reason behind the River fiasco). In particular, he managed to order a turntable of just the right diameter for the crossings to lie across the ends of the table, not a good idea! ... When I went through the calibration process I found that the printer calibration sheet was spot-on for sizes. Although I saved a calibration file the machine works 'straight out of the box'! Not cheap tho'. Thanks for the recommendation. Most top-brand ink-jets are very accurate when new. Not so laser printers -- and the heat tends to shrink the paper, increasing the error. ... Mar 2012 16:35 from: Phil O Hi Martin I seem to be getting a problem with the turnout templates, in that they were all done from a master template Great Western turnout as far as the crossing was concerned IE blunt nose set at 11/16ths and 4 inches from the timber Centre Line which I had set up in EM Gauge. I converted this to 00 for the purpose of this layout. When I started to sort out the timbering to suit Mr Smith's book I checked the dimensions of the first few turnout's at the left hand end of the layout and find that the fine point was 0.01mm and the centre of the timber to the fine point is 5.25 inches, so I started resetting them, on reopening the file the information is giving me these dimensions but looking at the template they look OK. I have opened up an earlier version with similar results> Have I done something wrong or is it a glitch. I attach the box files. I am using XP home on a HP compaq. Cheers Phil Early version ...

The problem I have, is that I'm not totally happy that the arrangement of the diamond crossover is geometrically correct or even lined up as accurately as it should be,and I still haven't got my head around the complexities of constructing a diamond crossover, so this is an appeal for help to iron out the bugs and missing elements of the arrangement.
