... topic: 2245 GWR 2 bolt chairs in 4mm scale posted: 1 Jul 2013 13:56 from: Stephen Freeman Hi, I have been busy making some masters for this non-existant 4mm scale item to produce some polyurethene castings mainly for my own use. The first mould is currently curing and I should be able to start casting within the next few days. The question is, is anybody else interested? Price will be in excess of the available 4 bolt ones available elsewhere but I haven't finally decided on the exact price. I'll post some images in due course with further info if that's OK. I should have mentioned that they are slide rail chairs not running rail chairs which are of course already available from C&L. On inspection, I was surprised to find that they have 0.1" wide wheels, particularly since a few years back their 2-6 -4 BR tank to experiment with I had bought had 0.11" wide wheels, as per the NMRA HO spec. Since I will be changing the wheels for P87 width ones, for use on 16.5 mm HO Track, it doesn't affect me, but It certainly won't help UK modellers using commercial 00 track. And, without checking, I thought the DOGA "specs" don't match that size wheel either. Am I missing something, or is this a big goof on Hornby's part? The background is that I have a room 16.5' by 11.5' in which I plan to build an OO gauge roundy roundy which will represent a small station on the ex GWR mainline between Plymouth and Newton Abbot. The station will also be the junction for a small branch which primarily is used to transport china clay from South Dartmoor. This means there will be exchange sidings and a bay platform as well as the usual small goods yard. If you are, you should be able to click on the link, and your browser will download the file and launch Templot for you. Templot will then ask you if you want to load the downloaded file. I've made a bit of Jing video showing that happening (in Firefox) -- it may take a few seconds to start: http://screencast.com/t /DEq7j9ezB If you prefer, instead of choosing to Open the downloaded file, you can choose the option in your browser to Save it. The snag is that they are not recommended for use on plastics (obviously one of the components needs to be metal, otherwise it won't cure). ... ..."- Why? I concur with Martins recent comments; the Templot interface has menus, it has pop-up boxes and other boxes that can be moved around on screen. It doesn't use the standard Windows colour scheme or fonts. Is that such a big blocker to its use? And why should users expect it to look like Windows? All the screenshots in Martin's advertising and in the many examples on here show that it doesn't. Sorry, but I just don't get this argument either. The next few points are to my mind all covered by the fact that Templot is a track design/ calculation/ analysis tool- it isn't a 2D CAD tool, it isn't a graphic design tool. The nearest analogy I have is to liken it to a stress analysis tool- if you don't understand the basics of stress analysis, you wouldn't try to use it. So how can you design trackwork if you don't understand the design parameters? "after pressing F4 I expect to move the mouse in the direction I want to move ...

It has taken me much longer than I expected but it is now ready. This is my first serious attempt at using the new FBR format, so please treat this as a first draft version. I would welcome comments and feedback. The idea of the new format is to combine a written tutorial with video in the same file, so that I don't have to do everything twice. I'm not entirely sure the idea has worked. Perhaps it should have been split into 2 or 3 shorter videos? How do you find the font size? It is much smaller than my eyes find comfortable, but if it's larger the text panels obscure too much of the video frame. The really noticeable difference is that their flangeways are up to 2-1 /2" wide, whereas my prototype is at 1-3 /4 ", significantly smaller in percentage terms. I'm keen to retain the narrow gutted look of our skinny flangeways as much as possible, but are prepared to ease these marginally in the interests of practicality. When I first started on this path a few years ago, Keith Norwood kindly provided diagrams of South African Rlys 3' 6" standards. However, standards used by the beefier SAR are more akin to those for standard gauge systems. When several SAR steam locos were imported to NZ by enthusiasts, tyres were required to be re-profiled before they were permitted to move through turnouts. I never imagined there could be so much difference between rail systems. Returning to my original question, that of appropriate clearance between rail and wheel flange- "or sideways slop" ...
