... of stretcher bars too. These look quite flexible as they attach to the blades through several nuts and bolts. I thought stretcher bars just pulled the blades the correct distance apart, but it looks as though in one direction these bars push to close the blade. On the model, Masokits seem to offer a very reasonable representation, and are surprisingly strong. My concern is whether they are too strong!- and not very flexible. My previous experience so far has been to use a moving plastic false sleeper with Peco pins inserted from below, one for each blade, each one cut short, curved round and soldered to the blade. Thus the pins can swivel in the plastic, and the design works perfectly, but is just not satisfactory visually. I wonder whether there are any other designs out there? Thanks in advance if anyone has any thoughts... However, you asked if the SHIFT& JOIN function is the best way to proceed, and it isn't. It is provided only as an aid for beginners familiar with other software. In Templot you only rarely need to join templates in that way. Most track planning is best done using the make tools, and by extending templates, splitting them, inserting turnouts into them. Other companies used chair screws or trenails (tapered wooden dowels), inserted from above, and the GWR used screws on pointwork. However, modellers seem always to refer to them as bolts, so that's another battle lost. Almost all the special switch and crossing chairs, bridge chairs, etc., have 4 screws, so I guess you are asking about ordinary plain track chairs? What you can do if a picture shape is obscuring something underneath is to tick the transparent option for that picture shape. You do have some control at the time of adding new background shapes -- if you click in the list the new shape will be inserted below the selected one in the list -- i.e. in front of it on the workpad. Also in his books Iain incorrectly refers to a half-scissors as an "outside slip", so it may not be entirely clear what he intended. Yes, start with the diamond-crossing. For an outside slip it will be a short one, typically 1:6 or shorter. Insert a turnout in the main road of one half-diamond and in the branch track of the other one. Probably you would want it to have a B-switch for a 1:5 outside slip, or a C-switch for a 1:6 outside slip. Apart from looking unprototypical it can also cause rough running and sometimes overthrow and coupling problems. Reverse curves always have a length of straight between them, or else they transition smoothly from one direction to the other in an S-curve. Generally in models we never have enough space, so inserting a length of straight between reverse curves isn't always feasible. But Templot makes it easy to create smooth S-curve transitions in place of reverse curves: 2_292139_340000000.png Here I have used Templot's make transition function to create a sweeping S-curve transition between your curves at A and B.
