... design, not necessarily an end in itself that can draw any track imagined with all the wing rails, check rail etc in the right place for some obscure logging railroad in the Urals. For construction purposes I can put in the appropriate check rails etc. without having to have them drawn in on the template. If I am not mistaken, most of what Templot does is based on GWR practice at some time in the past. This may not be strictly in accordance with other railway practices now or long ago, particularly outside the UK. Martin has given us the tools in Templot to make changes as we see fit in timbering and other design aspects. It is our task to determine the particular practices of our chosen railway if we wish to model track that closely. We all appreciate his desire to put more features into Templot, and that from time to time he asks for ideas for those additions. He, as developer of the software, is cognizant of what is both possible and practical to put into any upgrades. To compare its ...

Looks like the lengthman has been a bit remiss here. I can't see anything wrong on the first timber beyond the switch tips, but the timber immediately adjacent to the joint is apparently the one with a broken-off section of the right hand chair, and neither of the outside chair screws screwed full home. Perhaps that was the cause of the chair's fracture. And this on what seems to be a running line, judging by the track circuit bonding across the joint. posted: 25 Sep 2019 09:46 from: Martin Wynne John Palmer wrote: Martin Wynne wrote: Notice the S1-J chairs on the first timber beyond the switch tips, which is not per drawing. ... Mar 2009 23:20 from: Scott Willis Hi Guys You may remember my previous posting regarding a layout designed to fit in my railway room. Like most modellers, available space in which to build a layout is limited. For me it is a small box room measuring 10'x9'. The design is based on a small North British Railway urban terminus, in S-Scale. To give maximum running in a small room, the station area is spread around the room in a 'u' shape with the fiddle yard situated outside in the hallway. Of course, the fiddle yard will only be erected for running sessions. The inner two lines are the 'up' and 'down' lines, the third outer most line entering the fiddle yard leads to an imaginery off scene goods yard and loco shed. The outer most line leads to an imaginery off scene harbour. There have been some slight changes made to the original design, timbers have been shoved and check rails adjusted. Working from what few pictures I have, and with a bit of artistic ...

Hi Nigel, I know nothing about the EMGS turnouts, I can talk only about the prototype: 2_141732_480000000.jpg On a prototype REA B-switch, the switch rails span a total of 10 timbers (i.e. 9 beyond the first stretcher bar). The first 6 timbers have slide chairs. They are easily identified in photos because the stock rail is bolted to them, and the bolts are easily seen on the outside of the rail. Beyond the 6 slide chairs there are 4 block chairs, numbered 1 ..4, handed for left or right side. In the first 2 block chairs the switch rail is not constrained on the inside, and is free to flex open. They could also be called slide chairs, although the stock rail is keyed to them in the usual way, not bolted. This means that the switch rail is free to flex open over a total of 8 timbers. In the final 2 block chairs to the ...

... passion for A4's and the like. Standing at Wood Green and seeing an A4 plus 12 coaches thundering through is something you never forget. The need to model similar trains that will leave a terminus and travel some distance before disappearing is a goal I have tried to achieve. An earlier version of this layout got much further and it took a full 20 minutes for a train to leave the upper level, travel down through the lower levels and reappear. Unfortunately, I had to relay the levels and move the spiral to the outside of the layout as the storage yards became difficult to access and the gradients at 1:50 proved to be a problem. I have now cured that problem by dropping the lower level further and moving the spiral to the outside and incorporating an additional loop round. An A4 will now cope with 10 coaches up the 1:100 grade without problem so I know that is OK. Picking up your points in turn.. 1. The 2mm Scale Association and the 3mm Society have both commisioned their own ranges of chaired track (I believe from the same supplier). In the first turnouts I have made in 1:32 scale, I tried making them a tighter radius than the standard Templot ones but I'm not sure that I've made the radius tight enough. It's also a bit difficult to put a tightish radius on Code 180 bullhead and I suspect that I might need to make some king of press tool to do it in a vice. I've just popped outside to remind myself of what I have done- I store the track on the baseboards outside- plenty of room out there and that's where they are going to finish up in any case. I've basically used a shorter version of the Templot default straight bend but with a larger angle to give the same distance between the rail and the check rail flare end. I've gone back to the drawings on the oldpway site and one of them gives a largish drawing of a crossing nose and wing rails with some dimensions so it should ...
