I'm having difficulty getting the two switch exit roads to align- instead I'm getting doubling of the rails. A template is attached. Grateful for any advice please as toy where I'm going wrong. Many thanks. Alan Attachment: attach_2932_3533_Outside_Slip_AK.b ox 142 posted: 25 Oct 2019 13:13 from: Tony W Hi Alan. The short answer is that you have two turnouts curved to very different radii. Without knowing how critical the alignment of the approach tracks are, it is difficult to say what is the best way to proceed. However the usual approach with outside slips is to align the two turnouts albeit mirror image to each other first and then add the diamond afterwards. My attempt -copied at the end of this post- has managed to align with the entry and exit tracks but has a toe-to-heel length in 4mm/ft of 290mm. I should say that the original trackplan is a series of harbour lines (5'3" gauge or 21mm in 4mm/ft) with short loose-heel inset turnounts and sharp curves but my turnout design is more akin to the graceful lines of main-line practice. I have tried a customised turnout but I still cannot get a shorter turnout that matches the geometry. I'm assuming that in the OS map the line across the track in the approach to the turnout is the tie-bar? (BTW the lower left-hand corner of the map is at (1800mm,0mm) Thanks Edward 21 no-name [ ...

... mill and give adequate clearance in the Z direction. Or you can make up an adjustable protractor using two bits of strip hinged by one bolt. Then you can set the angle between the strips the same way as the crossing angles are calculated- e.g. six inches along and one inch up for a 1 in 6 RAM. Once you've set the angle and tightened the bolt to hold it, for an angle in the horizontal plane, use the edge of your milling table as reference for one leg of the protractor and align the metal you are cutting with the other leg. For the vertical plane, just place the protractor upright on the table and align the workpiece to match it. This is not super accurate, but should be accurate enough for model railway crossing angles. Your milling machine is quite lightweight but should do useful work if you take it easy. My milling machine has a one horse motor and would be quite a good boat anchor, but I bet Martin and Brian would still reckon it a bit titchy. Jim. posted ...

But for this exercise I left the outer curve fixed and modified only the inner one. It's necessary to combine a transition curve and a slew together. The transition curve changes the radius as required, and the slew then shifts the radial centres into alignment. A certain amount of trial and error is needed for a perfect result. Starting from the inner platform curve, I first transitioned out to the radius of the inner double-track (at 78.17mm centres -- this may need widening on sharp curves): length along the initial radius= 1000.0 (at the track centre-line) initial radius at the track centre-line= 2671.67 final radius at the track centre-line= 2872.83(= 2951-78.17) I initially set the transition zone length to ...

Are you on Windows or Wine/CrossOver/Linux? Does the map need rotating to get a better fit on the screen? What model gauge and scale? The old OS County Series map sheets predate the invention of the OS Grid in 1936. They use a different map projection, and don't align properly with each other on the sheet edges. For the Georeferenced slippy maps the NLS resample the scans on the global georeferencing scheme. In the process some straight lines become gently curved, some gently curved lines become straight, and the whole map is rotated slightly. These effects become more noticeable as you move a long way from the OS datum in the middle of the UK. For the "Find by place" maps the NLS publish the original single sheet scans unmodified. ... Hi Alex, There are no fixed rules. Beginners in Templot tend to go for the brick-by-brick approach, possibly using the F7 snapping function to "clip" individual templates together, in a similar manner to other track-planning programs. This method is simple and quick, but it can produce a disjointed "train-set" look if you are not careful. More experienced users prefer to lay out the broad sweep of the running lines first, and then insert the turnout templates in them (or align the templates over them). This is the classic way to use Templot and the most likely to produce a prototypical sweeping feel to pointwork. Or you can use whatever mixture of methods suits your own way of thinking and working. There are always several different ways to arrive at a similar result. There is no way Templot can know which of the many adjustments is the one you require, or how it would impact on the adjacent templates. If you work methodically, you shouldn't get any mismatches. That means extending and splitting templates, inserting turnouts in them, using the tools menu functions. Even if you use F7 snapping, the templates should normally align themselves without mismatches. If you just grab and copy templates at random and try to align them by eye, some mismatches are inevitable and there is no way Templot can fix them for you. ... far as I know Exactoscale do not supply any computer software, so the question of compatible file formats does not apply. Users of Exactoscale track products usually need a printed track template on which to build them. Exactoscale supply a limited range of straight templates in P4 only, but for other gauges, curved turnouts and complex formations many users print a template from Templot instead. You can print directly from Templot if you have a printer connected to your system. A track plan would typically comprise several pages, which are printed with alignment and trim marks. Alternatively you can export a PDF file from Templot which can then be printed on any system. More specifically, you can export a PDF track plan as a single page several feet long, which can be taken or sent to a digital copyshop and printed in one piece on a wide-format roll-paper printer.
