... topic: 3685 Kyle of Lochalsh- comments welcome posted: 31 May 2020 08:06 from: Julian Roberts Hi I've made a track plan for my intended layout, drawn exactly on the map as far as I am able. I wonder if this is as satisfactory as I think it is!? It's all done using the "beginner" tools but it looks fine to me- or maybe there are some improvements that can easily be made before I start actually making the trackwork? The only thing I know needs to be done (apart from finishing plotting one track into the shed) is putting in missing timbers on the 3 way turnout. I don't know if I can attach more than one file. I'll post again with the other file that Templot sent to my computer at the same time. (Apologies, I have just realised there is a small error on the above plans, the red line linking the lower level to the upper level has stopped short. They should be joined). The problem I am facing is that the length of the platforms is being compromised by the complex approach pointwork which at present is all standard straight points and double slips. Martin has suggested this could be much improved by customising the pointwork and building new curved points to move the entry further back, even moving it onto the adjacent board through 90 degrees. The problem I have is that I'm still really learning Templot and this is really throwing me in the deep end! Martin has very kindly drafted the basic plan but has suggested I place the plans on the Templot forum to see if you fancy a challenge! Of course if you really feel brave, any main line terminus design would be seriously considered. It should have 5 platforms ...

You may like to try searching using this link: experimental search You can choose to search Templot Club forums only, or the Templot Companion pages only, or all together in one go. For the Templot Club results, the search terms will be highlighted on the page and the page will scroll down to the first occurrence (not yet working for the Templot Companion pages). You may like to try comparing the results obtained from the above link, with those from the existing Search button at the top of this page, and reporting any obvious discrepancies. I'm hoping the new system will be an improvement, but it still needs some tidying up before it's ready. However, since the TDV installs separately, and having received, one might almost say an invitation to do so, and having reflected upon what has been said and written over the last several days about the new pug and TDV, I have decided to give it a go and see what changes/improvements to the program have been done and how easy it will be to use the program in the future. Also if I can be of assistance in providing feedback, good or bad, that will help further improve things. I'm sure I shall find a way of bending or breaking it. ... you would expect, it's in the diverging turnout radius between the heel of the switch and the V-crossing. When inserted in a 1000mm ruling curve, diverging to the outside of the curve, the resultant diverging turnout radius in such a situation is actually greater than that at 1484mm. The smaller radius of the two is in the main road at 1000mm, so Templot shows that as the "minimum radius now". That's actually a very ugly turnout. If it is not part of a crossover it can be much improved by changing to a curviform V-crossing instead of regular, which increases the turnout radius to 2510mm. Changing to a 9ft switch instead of an A switch is a further improvement, and the turnout radius is then 3635mm -- more than double the original 1484mm. regards, Martin. posted: 9 Feb 2011 08:55 from: Gordon S Martin Wynne wrote: That's actually a very ugly turnout. On an unrelated note but relating to the design of my railway, I have been looking through the Forum and noticed that for EM gauge, the recommendation seems to be for 36" minimum radius for the track. My available room is 11'6" by 6'5" so a 36" curve is problematic. I have previously built finescale OO using K&L /C &L components and their flexible track but although it is an improvement on typical RTR track, the sleepers are still too long (relative to the gauge) to my eye and I like the idea of EM as being a suitable compromise as I feel that it could theoretically be a regauged version of OO with improved flangeways and appearance. I appreciate that this is quite a simplistic view but I was hoping for the dockyard branch I would be able to get track nearer to 20" radius (with transition curves) and very tight radius points on the quayside. Use high-temperature solder because the rail gets hot while sanding. If necessary stop and dip it in a jar of cold water. Using high-temp solder also reduces the risk of it coming apart later if you are using soldered track construction. E is a scrap of rail or metal strip temporarily soldered across the vee rail ends to improve stability while sanding. It can be left in place until you are actually building the track, and then the surplus vee rail ends are trimmed back as required. V is the result after making two cuts on the sander as shown. Rob posted: 27 Feb 2011 23:13 from: Martin Wynne Hi Rob, The best advice seems to be to ignore both 0-XF and 0-SF and choose between 0-MF and S7. 0-MF (31.5mm gauge, 1.5mm flangeway) accepts all existing G0G-Fine "industry-standard" wheels easily, and gives much improved running over the original G0G-F 32.0mm standard. I have made some changes to speed up screen re-draws when zooming and panning, with much better results than I expected for large track plans. This change will be in the next program update 218d shortly now available. It will be interesting to have some feedback on this for different systems, processors and screen sizes. Separately from that, I have added yet another menu option, to improve the response when working on large track plans. Often in such cases all the current design work is taking place in a small area, despite the plan being much larger overall. I thought it would be helpful to be able to tell Templot to ignore temporarily all background templates outside a specified rectangle.
