... 26 Sep 2015 19:12 from: Andrew Duncan Yeovil Pen Mill update Sept 2015 I thought I'd post a couple of pictures of my progress in the garden, even if layout progress has been minimal in the last 6 months or so. The shed for the layout was quite a challenge. not having ever built anything this size from scratch before(22' x 11') I thought at various points over the last year (I started it in August 2014) that I'd bitten off more then I could chew. But I seem, with quite some help from my middle daughter Jeanne, to have almost got there now. It's even got power and heating in it but as you can see from the interior shot, with a work bench and a band saw, there isn't room to finish the baseboards which will go down the centre of the room! A couple of points :- 1) You say "You probably already know the basics of UK pointwork geometry" in section 4- what are you assuming that people already know? It may help to be specific and say" if you know xxxxxx xxxxx xxxxx then you are familiar with UK pointwork geometry" 2) I have said this before but once you have covered the absolute basics and brought people round to the Templot style I think it is important to give users some specific track design methods/worked examples as many may come to Templot( as Peco users wanting better prototype fidelity) and just want to design a single plan and then move off and build it only returning to Templot when the next new layout is due. The basic methods of making: Double track oval with passing loop and siding( like a Triang train set with a couple of track extension ...

So either the demand wasn't really there, or I got them just right first time -- which is difficult to believe. The same goes for several of the other new features -- platforms, gaunt turnouts, wrapping a picture shape along the control template, foot lines on FB templates, the dummy vehicle tool. Welcomed at the time, but since then -- silence. I can't believe they are all working so well first time that no one has anything to say about them. So I will confess that I'm a bit disappointed and wondering if I have taken a wrong turning. The sketchboard function took months of work and a considerable expense for the licence for the graphics engine. But only a few sketchboard screenshots have been posted here or on any other forums. ... from: Martin Wynne As I mentioned, the reports of folks using 3D printing to create bullhead chairs has spurred me to move chairing in Templot from the NOD* list to the to-do list. I started some experimental work a couple of years ago, and I have now returned to it. It seemed that if the output was to be of any use in 3D printing, the chair outlines would need to have the proper corner radii. It's a lot of extra calculation with 4 chairs on most crossing timbers, but it hasn't impacted too much on the screen response for full track plans. Obviously you would switch the chairs on only for the final printed templates, they are not needed while track planning. It's fiendishly complex. For example the REA bridge chairs (L1) have a larger corner radius (1.3/4 ") than ordinary S1 chairs (which have 1" corner radius): 2_161458_330000001.png And GWR slide chairs have a full semi-circular end on the inside, for example. Comments and suggestions welcome, but don't leave it too long or I may have moved on to something else. I'm minded to stop using the term "irregular" diamond-crossing because it has the potential to be confused with an error condition. Instead I'm thinking of calling them "curviform" diamond-crossings. We can't simply call them "curved" because of course a regular diamond-crossing can be curved. ... topic: 3667 Exporting a track plan to create a mimic panel posted: 13 May 2020 09:59 from: Gordon S Hi Martin/Fellow Templotters I've decided to build a mimic panel for Eastwood Town as I'm struggling to mentally convert the schematic diagram within my ECoS controller to the totally curved shape of my own layout. I now have the required amount of LED's and controllers from DCC Concepts, so thought I'd make a start on creating the track plan. My first thought was to use Sketchboard, but once I started to enlarge the panel, the track edges became jagged. The final mimic panel is going to be something like 800mm long by 400mm deep. I can't say the exact size as it's going to be governed by the need to place LED's within the track lines. The bezels of the LED's are 7mm diameter. In total there will be at least 72 LED's on the panel showing the turnout detection of 36 turnouts. What is the best way of accomplishing this? Ideally I would like to add six platform faces and text ...

I seldom use the same ones twice, and compared with an hour on Templot and hundreds or even thousands of mouse clicks in a session, half a dozen clicks at the start to change a few settings seem insignificant. Especially compared with the great advantage of starting from a known repeatable condition every time -- which also makes it much easier for me to provide user support. But I've been asked for saved preferences so often that I give in. In the next pug I will include the option to save some of your settings. But I need to know which ones -- I can't do every single thing that might be changed in Templot (although I can add more in each subsequent pug). I was hoping to be able to rebuild my current layout more prototypically using Templot, but personally I find it extremely complicated to use. I've looked at the videos and it all seems too easy, but reality is different to what is shown on some of the videos. for instance, I make a simple curved crossover on double track. I then try to modify one of the turnouts to get an easier radius, but then another turnout appears at random on the overall plan. I then find I can't print the original crossover, despite going into the template store; there's no print box shown.
