... do. Hi Gordon, Yes please, don't be wary of asking and suggesting things. The only way I know what folks are doing with Templot is from the feedback received. Don't worry, gone are the days when I might spend time on something I don't really want to do. I enjoy coding, but only on stuff I know I will find useful myself. Just now I've been side-tracked back into the 3D printing, after visiting a friend's layout a few days ago. There's a lot of unfinished 3D DXF stuff in Templot at present. cheers, Martin. posted: 25 Jan 2020 19:20 from: Gordon S Thought you may be interested in this. ... quiet about it. Which leaves me wondering where we go from here? There is still a lot missing from the open source version, including the PDF exports and the entire sketchboard function. Should I be spending time on solving these issues? They are no 5-minute tasks. Or just leave the existing open source where it is for anyone who wants it and otherwise forget it? There is also the question of open sourcing my more recent work on Templot2. I am in the middle of a big update to the DXF exports for the 3D rendering and possible 3D printing of bullhead chairing. The code for that will need a lot of explanation and commenting to make it sensible for others to read, and I have not yet done a user interface for all the many settings or any user help notes. It seems that open sourcing everything creates a lot of extra work, and from the level of interest so far I'm not sure that it's really worth it. cheers, Martin. posted: 4 Sep 2018 14:19 from: Rob ...

It would start from the current version of Templot2, minus the functions which can't be open-sourced such as the PDF export. and 2. a non-open MartinTemplot version which I would continue to tinker with as the mood takes me. ... track, because chaired bullhead requires a different timber thickness from soldered construction). There are several clunky ways which you might achieve the desired result in Templot, but none very straightforward or helpful. For example you could duplicate a template, set a marker colour on the lower one, and then omit some timbers on the upper template in the shove timber functions so that the coloured ones from below show through. Or you could export template files, and edit and print them in a separate program. For example entities in a DXF file could be edited to any desired colour in a CAD package, and the template printed from there. Likewise an exported EMF file could be edited in a program such as Metafile Companion, and then imported into Templot as a background picture shape for printing. The difficulty there would be restoring the correct scaling. None of the above is very convenient or sensible, so I'm not minded to provide detailed instructions. Instead I will release a program update soon in which the colour and/or infill style of an individual timber ...

While the above would be easy to do in Templot for inclined straight track, it gets more complex for the vertical curves top and bottom, and turns into a minefield for curved track and junctions. We are not going there. To create a true 3D representation I suggest exporting a DXF file from Templot, and making the corrections in a CAD package for the inclined tracks. In practice with the gradients in a typical finescale model railway the difference in length for a single turnout is barely perceptible, but it builds up for a long snaking gradient between levels, and especially for a helix spiral. I suggest that long tracks on a gradient are given a different marker colour, and saved separately as a group. So that you know when building them that length adjustments may be needed. cheers, Martin. ...

... common prototype BS-95R bullhead rail scales to code 131. I've never understood why that is, but it does mean that the key-top dimensions have to be modified to fit, and also to allow for the greatly overscale web thickness in all model rail sections. Also the keys are tapered wedges which normally remain projecting from the chair on the side from which they were driven. So you also need to specify which side, and by how much they remain projecting. Very soon Templot will be able to generate some DXF files for 3D printing. There is no charge for them, but on the other hand nor is there any guarantee that they are correct or represent any particular prototype. In fact I can say now that they don't and won't, because the curves and fillet radii in the original castings have to be simplified to keep the drawing complexity and file size within reasonable limits. Here for example is an REA 3-hole S1 chair generated by Templot, for BS-95R rail in 7mm/ft scale (no such model ...

For layout planning you may find a single long roll less than convenient to handle. Splitting it into 3 or 4 sections may be easier to use, and fall within their printing limits. For CAD roll printers the widest paper is usually 42" (1067mm), but poster printers may be wider. ... printing. Templot looks for a standard Windows printer driver, some of which can create files. If no joy there, there are two other options: 1. Install a virtual-printer PDF generator, and create your output as PDF files for printing elsewhere. This works very well under Windows with one of the many PDF generators -- Win2PDF is recommended. In the next upgrade version (free to existing users) Templot will be able to create PDF files natively. 2. Export you track plan and templates as a DXF file, for printing via any CAD package. I can dump to a friends networked laser printer Laser printers heat the paper, causing differential shrinkage. This can cause problems in the alignment of multiple template pages.
