... ' trackwork, I would estimate that the lost motion on each pin is of the order of .3mm. Whilst I have reservations about Howard Bolton's method of connecting switches by means of a functional scale stretcher and using this to drive the switch, I do favour his method of eliminating such lost motion by precise setting of the throw imparted by the crank used to move the stretcher. posted: 14 Apr 2015 14:33 from: madscientist my own idea, was to immediately underneath the sleeper, attach the pin to a sliding delrin, pseudo sleeper, shorter and narrower then the real sleeper above. This pseudo sleeper, prevents the switch blade from rising, and also allows the soldered hinge pin to pivot. I wasn't going to use a hinge tube. The drive from the point motor would then be collected to the delrin "sleeper" The main issue I have is that a hinge pin failure might need the removal of the turnout. but I suspect this is an unlikely failure mode posted: 16 Apr 2015 11:08 from: madscientist I'll ...

... milling processes start about a third of the way down the page. The only machining I don't do is the angled inner top of the switch blade, which I do by hand with a file, along with the shaping of the nose of the blade. It has worked very well and I'm hoping to apply the same methods in machining Code 87 rail for S scale. Jim. posted: 9 Dec 2015 18:28 from: madscientist Thanks Jim I'm currently toying with the fixturing on cad, I'll probably produce that in delrin. The main issue is to hold the rail vertical and square to the bed. I can then program in the different tapers as required With code 75, my preliminary tests show too much flexing in the rail, even with very shallow cuts. So I need backing plates behind the rails. The current idea is to have removable backing plates so that both side tapers can be done without resetting the jig Of course the great thing is a Cnc mill can make its own fixtures! ... at the cutting profile. I charge A$40 per hour for computer time. For the example given (Curved scissors crossover), computer time was about 30 minutes. So A$20, or at current exchange rates 9GBP. Cutting cost for this example A$32 or 15 GBP. So all up cost around 24 GBP. This assumes there is no problem with the DXF file. The main thing with this is leave the extensions to the sleepers off. These track bases can also be cut in plastic, Styrene, ABS, Acrylic, Delrin (Acetal), but definitely NOT PVC. The same principals can also be applied to cutting station platforms, buildings etc. Mike posted: 8 Jan 2009 19:45 from: Martin Wynne Mike Pogson wrote: The final picture shows a track base cut in plywood for this formation P1030790.jpg Hi Mike, That's looking good. Just one thing to mention though. I notice the logo "Lovett Scale Models". If you are using Templot commercially, you need a commercial-use licence. The standard Templot licence is ...
