... topic: 3607 Making sense of program code in Lazarus posted: 8 Feb 2020 15:31 from: DerekStuart Hello Martin Sorry, I can't find the thread you discussed this, but could you add me to the list of those who can view the development sub-forum, please? I am particularly looking for the thread where you described how to get started with programming (the link to the compiler and there were a couple of useful sites you suggested for further guidance.) I'm afraid I'm not about to develop Templot 3 any time soon, but I'm hoping to get beyond "Hello World." Many thanks Derek posted: 8 Feb 2020 15:48 from: DerekStuart Thanks Martin. I can see it now. As you can see from the attached link (I couldn't upload it as it's copyright by RCTS) at the lower left there is a length of rail on the OUTSIDE of the running rail. It is about the length of an average checkrail and opposite is what looks like either a grease reservoir or some sort of actuator. I know that due to the severe curves in and out of the station (Whitby) there are several grease points, but this seems to be on the outside of the track. No doubt someone here will know and I'll reply with "ah of course. I should have thought that." I have read much of this forum now and learned an awful lot, but with a huge amount more to learn about this complex tool. I have experimented and designed several "looks about right" goes at a junction, but I feel I am now ready to look at doing it 'properly', but I need help. If I may explain what I am doing: I have been away from modeling for [cough] years and have never modeled beyond finescale oo. However, having seen what can be achieved with Templot, I am going to go for P4. I have quite an ambitious layout in mind (35ft- and no, you can't talk me out of it!). I am going to build a number of smaller modules to gain experience and re-gain practice etc. What I am trying to do is to plot the trackwork now so that I can best decide how to ...

I have given the stock rail a nice, gentle curve as per NER design (8ft radius. I am using Exactoscale functional chairs on ply. As a result of the 1:20 rail incline the centre of the curve is lower than the adjacent 'point rail' (even with the gentle tapering as specified in the NER diagram). Because the inner part of the tread (larger dia.) is already on a raised point rail, by the time it reaches the apex of the curve, the outer part of the tread (smaller dia.) is floating ready to drop down. I have of course made sure that the rail is supported at this point. The drop in height is just as a result of the rail being tilted at this point. My question is- as ...

I am building my first C9 crossover (P4) to (L )NER design after 'graduating' from B6 and B8 single units. I have taken the diagram from the NERA books and shoved the timbers in Templot and verified with a close up photograph. All well and good. However, the diagram shows a 17ft splice rail* and that means the rail joint will be not only behind the opposing turnout's check rail but actually directly on a chair. I have found a photo from a much earlier time at another location (NER) that shows the splice rail at the close end of the opposing check rail giving an approximate length of 8ft. I'm sure I read somewhere that short splice rails were done away with quite early and I have not found any reference to uses longer than 17ft. Does anyone have any opinions on this please? Can anyone work out what is happening here? What I was expecting to find was a short turnout (A6) with the toe leading onto a diamond. The road above the green arrow and between the blokes bisects the other two (which should be down to one road BEFORE the diamond). The two closest roads must lead through the diamond and from there out onto the main line- I presume that as it has a ground signal, whereas the rest of the shed is of course not signalled. However, looking at the red arrow head, there's no wing rails, although you can just make out what I think is the turnout blade for the check rail closest to the camera. What is puzzling me is just above to the right of the red arrow, it looks like another rail curving away like you would expect in ...

I have studied as many photos as I can of the trackwork in question and still can't be sure which turnouts are the most likely, although Tony W did help me and agree that a tandem was a B6/B8. So I am going to go on the "most likely" for the scenario. At a line speed of 25-30 would a crossing through a B8 be realistic, or should it be C9? Equally, at the station throat when the speed limit was at 15mph (or slower) would a B7 be most appropriate? Scalefour recommends no less than a B7 on a running line. I have looked at one turnout still in use which appears to be a B6- although it is a run around loop that was once the entry to the carriage sidings and not one for general running. That led to me resurrecting a broken pipe bender at work... I made a rudimentary copy for bending rails and it worked (sort of). But this would only work for straight turnouts. I am not an engineer nor mathematician, but I don't need to be- most of what we do can be copied in principle from the real railways. My question is this- whilst this is very simple for a straight turnout, for a curve- let us say 100Xr and then a knuckle bend of 10Xr you effectively have unlimited possibilities and I cannot believe they had limitless options for presses in the factories.
