... topic: 1002 Printing problem posted: 1 Jan 2010 12:32 from: Gilbert B Sorry to bother you, but I have an irritating glitch which is stopping me from using Templot to its full potential. Gordon S has very kindly given me a basic tutorial on how to create templates, which is fine, but when I try to print off any template which requires more than one page all that happens is that the first page gets printed, then everything just hangs. It won't print page 2, but it won't let me delete it either! I have to switch off the PC and unplug the printer in order to clear it. The printer works OK when doing anything else, it just plays up when trying to print templates. Any ideas/suggestions would be gratefully received. Happy New Year. Best regards Gilbert posted: 1 Jan 2010 13:01 from: Martin Wynne Gilbert B wrote: when I try to print off any template which requires more than one page all that happens is that the first page gets printed, ...

But once you get started in Templot you will find that the SMP templates don't match prototype practice, and most users prefer to build their pointwork on templates printed from Templot. ... one of their timbertracks turnouts- you don't need the laser cut timber template- just glue ply timbers on your Templot printout. Regards. Fiddling with glue and little bits of plastic was never my forte, my eyesight is not what it used to be and my hands are a bit on the 'not so nimble' side so, to be frank, I'm much happier with a soldering iron as the end result is more likely to be stronger and more accurate. I've been very impressed with the trackwork on Eastwood Town created by Gordon S and, if mine looks half as good as his when finished, I'll be absolutely delighted. Copying his construction methods and materials suits me best given my deficiencies and if I'm not happy with the result then I might have a go at what you suggest. ... to TDV. Essentially you created a transition curve which was too gentle for the maths processor in your computer. "Too gentle" means the radius was changing by too little in too long a transition zone. The problem will disappear as soon as you change one of the radii, or shorten the transition zone. Generally when this happens you can split the difference in radii and replace the transition with a fixed radius curve. Often the screen is more alarming, and you can create some startling effects, like this one from Gordon S: 479_260758_150000000.jpg It's difficult for me to prevent, without restricting the necessary functionality. One day I may have a fresh look at the transition maths -- I wrote the transition code many years ago. Once you know about it you can just ignore it. Lots of timbers were completely missing although the rails were there and the timber numbering mostly came out as solid black rectangles. Hi John, I think this must be a driver problem. Gordon S also has a printer which omits random rails and timbers, seemingly without rhyme or reason. Trying the same thing on a different printer worked perfectly. Printing smaller/fewer pages in one go may not cure it but can only help. Most printing problems can be cured by using a lower print resolution. Some printers now come with absurdly high quoted dpi figures intended for photo printing. For track templates 300dpi or 600dpi is plenty. ... to the rails file/grind back to rail sides Hi, and thanks for the immediate response!! I don't think it's a back to back issue. I think the problem was that I didn't curve the turnout switch enough at the vee. If I check the alignment it is a tiy tiny bit out, which I think is causing the bump. But it was quite late and not well lit when I looked, so I'm going to check again before unsoldering. I will also check the check rail again. As Gordon S points out in his ET thread, he feels the positioning of the check rail is vital to smooth running, and this seems logical to me. Here it could be, as you point out, useful to check the back to back gauge. I assume I can also buy a gauge from C+ L whilst purchasing some proper flux... It's a good thing it's nearly Christmas! The items themselves are not at all unreasonably priced, but it is quite expensive getting them sent over here each time! ...

Lets face it we are all bonkers in our varying levels of attention to detail when it comes to something to run locomotives on. I agree with Martin that spreading the ends of RTR sections to match is the easiest option if one wants to go down that road. Regards. Trevor. well, I asked, The master has replied. ... . In my mind I'd taken it as read that all our model trackwork would incorporate a 'tie bar' although in all honesty I hadn't looked at the Templot templates to see if they were there. I think I'm suffering from reading overload and self inflicted confusion as I distinctly recall reading that 'x' had to be fixed to a timber and not left hanging in the air, which I now realise relates to the frog (or 'V' crossing) and not the switch diamond or point blades. Re-reading some of Gordons thread on ET, I see he has replaced the first sleeper each side of the centre shared one to use as improvised stretcher bars, so I think I'll adopt the same principal.
