... If a lossless format is required for photographic images, PNG can be used, but file size will be significantly greater than JPG. regards, Martin. posted: 12 Nov 2011 19:47 from: Tony W Hi Martin. I stand corrected. It is PSD files that I was getting mixed up with. The trouble is that there are so many file formats around these days. Not that I have used PNG files much either, can't think why in retrospect other than not being aware of them. I agree that JPEGs are not the best file format even though it is what most cameras seem to use. Where I can I always scan as bitmap and only save as JPEG when I am certain I have finished any editing for the very reason you state. I have used TIFF format in the past but they are not much smaller than BMP files. Tony. posted: 25 Nov 2011 22:27 from: Tony W Hi Martin. Hi Nigel, The file needs to be in BMP format (Windows Bitmap) and saved in your C:/TEMPLOT/SHAPE-FILES folder. Your scanner software should allow you to save in that format to that folder. First I drew the track plan out using Sigscribe, a free download from the Australian Modratec lever frame web site available after you register with them. This is an impressive little programme and a quick way of generating a diagramatic track drawing in proper proportion. Then used Print Screen to paste this into Windows Paint and cropped down to just leave the track diagram. Saved this as a JPEG image file. Opened a black worksheet in Excel and adjusted column width to 3 and row height to 20.This gave me a square grid pattern which helps with the drawing out. (Incidently in Excel a width of 7 and height of 30 will produce an almost perfect square grid). Then zoomed-out to give as large an area as possible on the screen- I chose each screen grid square to represent 3mm on the finished plan.
