... out-of-memory condition and make a more graceful recovery. Thanks for reporting it. I also think there may be an issue with the save file options as when you select a different file type in the file type window, it does not automatically change in the file name window (as it does in Windows) and needs to be deleted manually unless you are overwriting everything, eg changing the file type to .JPEG still saves as .PNG. The big question there is why do you want to save from Templot in JPG format? I was sorely tempted not to include the JPG option, but allowed it because you may perhaps have a large scanned image on the background as a picture shape. The JPG format is intended only for photographic real-world images from a lens (camera or scanner). It is the worst possible format for saving screen graphics and makes a pig's ear of it. Your screenshot above would have been much clearer and sharper in PNG format, and would have been a smaller file size at the same time. ...

However, it would seem the requirement is for GIF format, so that's what will be provided. Hi Brian, Thanks for your further thoughts. Sketchboard can add bitmap items in any of these file formats: BMP, GIF, PNG, JPG, HCK. It is important for non-rectangular objects that the background can be made transparent. Otherwise such objects would be displayed on a rectangular image patch. This means that only GIF and PNG are the real options, and sketchboard supports transparent backgrounds for both of these formats. In theory PNG is better because it can support transparency with full colour, whereas GIF is limited to 256-colour format. In practice not all image editor programs support transparent PNGs (so users might have trouble editing them if needed) ...

After much head scratching I have finally beaten the Windows metafile functions into submission. The base track plan can now be inserted either in raster format (bitmap) or in vector format (metafile). The latter provides much improved zooming and printout. It also provides an EMF file in passing, which can be opened in most photo editor programs, and then re-saved in GIF or PNG format (or JPG if you must). This means I no longer need to provide a separate raster image output in these formats, which has saved quite a bit of work. regards, Martin. posted: 4 Jul 2010 18:48 from: Brian Nicholls Martin Wynne wrote: I thought I would start a topic where I can report occasionally about what I'm currently working on in Templot. That is a message from the system, not from Templot. When I write error messages I try to be a bit more helpful and make suggestions to avoid the problem. Your image must be heavily compressed in the JPG file to go from 297 MB in the bitmap down to only 3.89 MB in the file. It is the bitmap size which Templot has to deal with internally after expanding the file, and 297 MB is on the large side of normal expectations. Your screenshot shows it to be 20513 x 5076 pixels. There are several things you can try. The obvious one is to resize it in Photoshop to a smaller size. If you reduce it to say 33%, 6838 x 1692, that would reduce the bitmap size ...

Start your favourite picture editor program or Windows Paint. 4. Click Edit> Paste. 5. Save the image -- but NOT, please not, in JPG format. JPG is totally unsuitable for screenshots and computer graphics, and will produce the largest file size and worst possible image quality. JPG is intended for real world images captured with a lens (from cameras and scanners). Save instead in GIF or PNG format. Ideally first reduce the colour-depth to 8-bits and then save in PNG format.
