... function of chord length of same-radii tangents emanating from the frog point? In the US I wasn't aware that standard gage track work varied at all across railroad companies. I'm told I'm quite wrong about that, and I will check for recorded standards. Are there North American standards now incorporated into the Templot generic libraries of N-Scale (9 -mm) or HO Scale (1 :67) track switches? Thank you all in advance for your help. I'll be quiet until having read the referenced documents. Jeff Thompson Florida- flatland railroading! posted: 17 Mar 2012 23:11 from: Tony W Hello Jeff. I am not really up on US track and how it is specified. UK track specifies the Crossing and Switch angles by offsets. For instance a 1 in 6 crossing will widen 1 unit for every 6 units distance from the crossing nose. Switch blades are similar but use letters A to F or G for predefined angles. On the heading page (go back one) take a look under the Templot Companion ...

My questions are: What is the connection between Templot and Trax? How do I post a question on the discussion group? Best regards from Belgium Jack posted: 28 Jun 2014 12:08 from: Martin Wynne Hello Jack, Welcome to Templot Club. There is no direct connection between Trax and Templot. Trax (currently Trax3) is a paid-for computer program written by Jeff Geary and available on CD from Noodle Books: http://billhudsontransportbooks.co.uk/selected-product.php?pid=3521 Templot (currently Templot2) is a computer program written by me and available as a free download: http://templot.uk The programs are not directly comparable. Templot2 contains many more track design functions than Trax3. Against that Trax3 includes electrical control design (DC) and signal interlocking functions which are not in Templot2. As a paid-for product Trax3 also comes with a book containing practical modelling help ...

... as your description of the best practices. I agree with Matthew's conclusion that you, Martin, can really not afford to add much effort to the documentation issue under discussion here. A bit of gathering of the bits and pieces, plus organization by one of us who is reasonably good at it would pay largest returns, IMHO. Also, as stated previously, a user must be willing to put in some continuing, preferably scheduled and organized, time and effort to get past the "hello world" level of expertise. Jeff Thompson posted: 12 Jul 2012 07:28 from: Mark C Hi Guys, I am a newbie to Templot from Florida, USA (Hi Jeff) and am very excited to have found this marvelous software. I am just getting into hand-laying HO track. So, I have little or no experience in that department. However, I have used lots and lots of computer software programs. I was simply faced with a brand new unknown computer and a program which I wanted to make work on it. Nothing much has changed in the subsequent years and isn't now likely to. There are others with more Windows software experience who have written similar programs, and clearly if full Windows compliance is important those could be used instead. For example Jeff Geary has created Trax3, and there is S21 ModelGleis from Bernd Steimann and Christian Sender. However, I don't believe Templot is difficult to use provided you don't start off expecting it to be something which it isn't. In the early days most folks had much smaller screens, and keeping as much of it as possible clear for track design was important. So for example the mouse action panel can be hidden from view if it is in the way (the Delete key toggles it, or simply click on it), ...

I'm not really interested in what happens in other software unless it would clearly be helpful in the design of model railway track. For example Jeff Geary's Trax has an ingenious dummy template which can be used as a double-track spacer. I've been minded to steal that idea for years. What would be helpful would be to know which specific functions you would want to assign to a custom button or menu item or keyboard shortcut? The internal design of Templot having been developed piecemeal over 20 years, would make it a major coding task to allow any function to be assigned to any button. What I do feel is that it is easy to forget that Templot ...

Author JEFF GEARY explores the possibilities of controlling a model railway in prototypical fashion, namely by operating points and signals from a signal-box style lever frame. Making the frame mechanically interlocked, ensures that trains can only be signalled when the correct route is set, and that conflicting routes cannot be set at the same time. This new book also explains the principles of signalling, the different types of signal and their significance, and how a typical track diagram would be signalled. The application of these principles to the model railway is ...
