... some people just soldering switch blades directly to a PCB tiebar but I suspect these will come adrift sometime with the forces involved at the blade tips. A motor driven point motor like the Tortoise is a lot kinder to pointwork than the solenoid type. Solenoid types can work spring blades perfectly well but the forces generated can cause breakages with tiebars or the loosening of stock rails at the switch. I would go for the Tortoise style of point motor if you can. ... topic: 859 Templates for Flat-Bottom track posted: 8 Jun 2009 23:46 from: MikeTrice I have bitten the bullet and bought a copy of Templot, specifically to produce templates for Flat bottom track. I have long appreciated the benefit of having accurate templates to simplify track construction. By accurate I mean with the correct rail dimensions and clearances, as it makes a difference where rail bends occur. It also clarifies where the foot of the rail has to be removed to allow the switches to mate with the stock rails. I was therefore very disappointed to learn that Templot does not reproduce the foot of the flat bottom rail (unless I am missing something). I have built a number of flat bottom turnouts using my own templates and always rely on the position of the footer to fix the rail into the correct location on the turnout, especially when fixing the initial straight road. The problem of course is that without the footer being shown once the rail is in place you cannot see where the rail head should be located, ...

Any hope that this feature is on the list for the next PUG update? ... topic: 861 Can I do the following? posted: 10 Jun 2009 22:09 from: MikeTrice Oh boy, this is going to be a slow learning experience. Any advice regarding learning Templot from recent new users gratefully received. I have found how to override track gauge and check gauge widths. On the other hand I have not found if it possible to do the following: Change sleeper width for both turnouts and plain track. Change default sleeper spacing for turnouts. Change the length of the machined ends on checkrails. Any suggestions? Thanks posted: 10 Jun 2009 23:40 from: Martin Wynne Hi Mike, Change sleeper width for both turnouts and plain track. Change default sleeper spacing for turnouts. Turnouts have timbers. Plain track has sleepers. It is important to keep this distinction in mind in using the Templot terminology. In UK track, they are not the same width. In version 091c, click the real> timbering> timbering data... menu item. Click the more info F1 button, and the ...
