But I'm sure we can adjust the pointwork to gain a few inches which I'd like to do for a couple of reasons. 1) Currently the two carriage/parcels sidings can't quite store 4 coaches but another couple of inches they can. 2) I have the space :P The platform capacities are as follows ...

... of the main lines. This gives you a nice long piece of scenic section on the left. The downside is reduced fiddle yard capacity of course. A simple trade-off to ponder. The darker blue track is a complete ring at the high level. This gives you a continuous-run test track clear of the visible layout. There are crossovers connecting in to the outer fiddle yard road. With some "extreme carpentry" you could even fit in another orange road under the hi-level blue track. The pink track on the left is the docks branch rising to connect in to the high level ring. You would need some additional crossovers between dark blue and green at 5 o'clock to gain better access to the fiddle yard for docks traffic. Without knowing the layout better I can't answer about construction methods. I would think the main part of the new fiddle yard would be identical to the existing boards. The high-level pointwork could be on removable panels resting on blocks on the boards below. The ramps could be detachable constructed ...

The fracture, grain size and greenish tinge makes me wonder if it isn't markfieldite (a microdiorite from Charnwood). It seems that we all agree on an igneous rock (ie. definitely not limestone). There are a number of restrictions about combining turnouts in this way. I have altered the turnouts in the station approach tandem to arrive at something more feasable but am still pushing it with the middle crossing. This will give you a bit more length than the original design you posted. The goods yard point (the pink one) I have left as a three throw for the moment. Although appropriate in a goods yard, they can be difficult to construct and operate and if you do not fancy the challenge there may be an alternative of making the turnout before the three throw a tandem instead. I have only done them in rough for the moment, it is not worth sorting out the timbering etc until the design is finalised, I have learned that the hard way. Anyway, see what you think. Tony.
