Select the longest switch available. This is a temporary suggestion until gaunt turnouts are available in a later pug. (I will expand on this separately.) I set a 30ft straight switch. They were obviously an expensive item. Hi Martin, Crossing timbers were normally available to designers in lengths from 8ft-6in (or previously 9ft in pre-grouping times) in increments of 6in up to 30ft. The very long timbers were expensive, and different companies had different rules about how many could be used. Some were very sparing with long timbers. Comparing an LNER drawing for a crossover with a GWR equivalent, you can see the latter used far more long timbers and produced much more heavily-timbered formations generally. Sometimes where a long timber was required it was made up on site by halving and splicing two shorter ones, using bolted- ...

I was looking round for a suitable source of inspiration when I came a across a book my father had purchased several years previously, Return to Bawtry by Jack Smith (The Waterdale Press, 1992, ISBN 0 906976 33 2). Jack Smith spent 13 years at Bawtry, where his father was Station Master from 1930. I had lived at Bawtry during the 1980's but until I read this book I hadn't thought of using it as the prototype, the station at the time I lived there having been closed for many years. The book showed a busy little station with local passenger workings to Doncaster and Grantham, a goods yard, coal train loops and storage sidings, and main line express trains thundering past. ...

None of these functions is yet finished, but I have made significant progress in recent weeks. Templot Sketchbook is new separate function within Templot -- almost a separate program in its own right. It's a mini desktop-publishing/drawing package, which will allow the creation of colourful layout plans, control panels and diagrams directly within Templot. Previously it was necessary to export a DXF file and do this sort of thing in a separate CAD program. Here's an example of what can be done in Templot Sketchbook: defynnog.png Here's a screenshot showing Templot Sketchbook in use: sketchbook_draft.png I have zoomed and resized it to match the underlying track plan on the pad. I visited the Birch Coppice railfreight terminal last week and as there is a public footpath right in front of the terminal and over some of the approach track I was able to take some pictures of the trackwork*. All of the S&C work was flatbottom rail on woodern timbers, but it's a fairly new terminal, and we think it's been relaid recently as the industrial units are popping up at a rate of knots and it looks different to some of the photographs we'd previously seen. I'll see if I can at least work out the switch sizes from my photographs tonight. ... topic: 2369 Outside Single Slip posted: 1 Jan 2014 12:55 from: Michael Woolford A while back, I started manually draughting (using templates) the trackwork for my new layout. This involved determining the position of turnouts and once happy, sticking the templates to a large roll of paper and penciling in the plain track. Only partially complete, it is a very time consuming process and mistakes/alterations take a long time to redraw (especially if the paper is damaged when removing a previously stuck sown template). All of my turnout templates were obtained from the EMGS and C&L. The C&L templates include an outside single slip with crossing angles of 1 in 4.5 and 1 in 6.5.
