... of resilience between the sleeper and the ballast. This is a particular problem as speed increases. With very few exceptions pots were only used in low speed applications. The pot sleepers are a compromise between material use and suitability for purpose. Hence the lack of tie bars on a majority of sleepers per length of rail. In a wartime and austerity settings they don't use too much steel or concrete. And don't use timber. During and post war a lot of energy was spent coming up with ways to make what would have previously been considered useless split timber sleepers be useable. Various clamps and straps and bolting formats were developed. It was that bad. Matt M. ... local club, knowing I liked a Templot challenge to test his track building skills, decided to ask me to draw him up a complex group of turnouts and crossings at the entrance of a proposed fiddle yard. This period of enforced isolation during CoronaVirus, seemed to offer the ideal opportunity to sit down and revive my wider knowledge of the program. Alas, having not used Templot for a couple years other than to print out the odd template, I find myself back in the land of "the beginner" once again! Previously, I had tackled (with Martin's help) to work out turnouts designs for On30 and 7mm scale dual gauge Broad& Standard turnouts and crossings, and these involved a fair amount of editing. However, Templot 2 v2.25d and the imminent release of Templot 3, the program now includes options for 3-ways, tandems and slips that were not there before. I used to have to alter turnouts adding half crossings etc, then adjust rails and check rails, switchblade lengths and so on, ending with a jigsaw of ...

We have in the last few days made some progress on the outstanding issues: High CPU usage: A kludge solution has been found which can be lived with until a proper fix is discovered. Thank goodness -- that had been a big worry. BOX and BGS file formats: We now have a working means of data interchange between Templot2 and Templot3, which I suspect was the main reason for the lack of interest previously. Recent new functions in Templot2 missing from Templot3: With the renewed interest in Templot3 there is no reason why I shouldn't progress that soon. I will post the code and we can get on with it. Missing Lazarus functionality: We are nearly there with the file viewer thanks to Graeme's help. For the remaining stuff I'm minded to create helper Windows executables. I'm very familiar with making BH track, but FB is all new to me! I've previously seen advice about filing a notch in the foot at bends, and that feels wrong to me- I might well change my mind once I've accidentally twisted a few rails trying to bend them! I'm still unsure as to whether or not it was generally accepted practice on the prototype to cut either the stock rail or check rail foot back to allow the correct gap.
