... something a lot simpler, You'll find something very similar to your design ideas in terms of holding the rail in place, in the product line of the 2mm society. Just make it bigger. Andy posted: 23 May 2008 14:07 from: Martin Wynne Andy Reichert wrote: Your prototype may be one of the very few NG lines that didn't use tie plates at all. Hi Andy, The track on the right in this picture appears not to have any tie-plates: 1a34663v.jpg Tracks at C& NW RR's Proviso yard, Chicago, Ill. 1943 April The original idea of flat-bottom rail (a difficult section to roll) was that the wide foot would be able to spread the load directly onto the timbers. When flat-bottom rail was generally adopted by BR, the existing range of BS FB rails were regarded as having an unnecessarily wide foot when used on baseplates, and a new series of sections with a narrower foot was introduced. Quoting from BRT3: "The BS 110lb rail was not considered to be an ...

... Wynne Thanks for all the comments and advice -- much appreciated. I said that I didn't know how to reply to that email, but I can now send a link to this topic. In reply to some of the comments, here are some extracts from the order confirmation letter which I send to new purchasers of Templot: "Please read all of this letter before starting to use Templot" No-one ever does, of course. "Upgrade to 091c when you have become familiar with Templot basics. With the proviso that diamond-crossings and slips are much simplified, so leave trying those until you are ready to upgrade to 091c. On the other hand, if you have previously used other track design programs and prefer simply to snap templates together, rather than work through the tutorials for prototypical design, you may want to upgrade to 091c immediately." A complaint that the release version 074b and the accompanying tutorials are out of date and don't properly reflect the current Pug versions would be entirely justified -- and I would find it ...

... Now whenever you want a plain track template, click on that one and select copy to the control/current. Now you can shift it to where you want it, curve it, etc. When you then do insert turnout in plain track, you will get the original #5 turnout back again. The same thing happens if you make plain track by splitting off the approach or exit tracks from a turnout -- when you insert a turnout in them, you get the original turnout settings back. (Just one proviso. If the original turnout included shoved timbers, and you want to preserve them every time, ignore the above and use the align functions instead of insert. Your turnouts don't include shoved timbers, so you can disregard this.) regards, Martin. posted: 31 Mar 2010 06:30 from: BruceNordstrand That is excellent news, Thanks Martin. ... you prefer to use? N-S rail to plastic base plate to ply. I haven't discounted having some etches done but then I'll be glueing N-S to brass to ply hopefully in one go. Is there a good glue for this application. I've had very good results with Loctite 435. I've used this to glue plastic slide chairs to N/S rail and ply timbers. Where I've subsequently needed to remove the slide chair, the glued remains need to be chiselled off... The usual couple of provisos- the surfaces need to be properly clean, and 435 isn't a gap filler so you need to have good mating surfaces. Neither should be a problem though. Oh, and keep the bottle in the fridge when not in use- it's not cheap and it's irritating (!) when 3/4 of the bottle goes off before you use it I would have one reservation about all glued construction, and that's to do with rail expansion- make sure the sleepers/timbers can move as you're fixing them rigidly to ...

... is such a useful and powerful help to the modeller- I am a fully paid up "Neo-Luddite" but have still managed to complete (with some help!) a (for me) fairly complex layout design and (at least) start construction- my project would never have got this far without TEMPLOT. As far as trap points- Brighton ones appear to be double bladed, so I've just inserted a turnout and shorten the overal length so that I only get the bits I want! As for Alan's proviso (above)- I would not claim to have that knowledge and would still say that it is possible to use TEMPLOT without it- like most software (including that designed by the so-called professional (or is it just commercial?) outfit run by Mr Gates) you do need to be using it to become fluent- like a foreign language. Take heart Martin and carry on the good work! best wishes Richard posted: 16 Jul 2013 11:05 from: Paul Boyd I think Matt has this ...

This may be longer or shorter than normal, according to the current TS track centres setting. 3. long -- the turnout road terminates opposite the end of the main road exit track (TOLP peg position). But always with the additional proviso that the turnout road cannot be longer than the main road in any event (template overall length). This can occasionally cause difficulty, for example in a situation such as this: 2_271436_020000001.png A wide crossover has been inserted in tracks at 10ft way. But the turnout on the left needs to be shortened to allow space for the lower right turnout to be inserted without a conflicting overlap. The result is an unavoidable gap in the crossover road. Until now the only solutions have been to accept the overlap; or use ...

It was spot on what I was hoping for (including the conditions and provisos) in particular the fact that you needed time to consider the answer. It put to rest any fears that I was not clear in my question. SO... rather than muddy the waters further with point-by-point responses, I will get on with some work. I do not feel that the file viewer really satisfies your definition of 'new' functionality, but I would still like start with that as I am not even really a proper user of Templot, and it will give me a chance ...
