I would imagine that there are 'groups' e.g. one set of values for each shoved timber, etc. Structure The data we are storing clearly has a structure (i.e a file is some header data followed by a group of templates; a template is a group of settings followed by some info strings followed by some memo strings; I would guess the settings also have some structure within them- for example the date and time on 1010/1015 are probably both related to the same thing. However, the file sample has no structure to it- it is 'flat'. I would suggest that we adopt one of the existing file formats which have been designed for storing and transmitting data such as this. This would have the benefit of familiarity to any other developers we entice to join the project and also give us tools that we can use to process the files, for example viewers which understand the structure and can present it nicely. May not apply to track parts, to any great extent. With track it pays to actually buy a sample and try it out, say by building a bit of test track. As regards looks, there are plenty of pics around showing the stuff. What may be a more valuable bit of experience is seeing layouts where it has actually been used. A lot of us can't get to shows, so the above is possibly the only way. Most CAD programs can save files in WMF or EMF metafile format. It's an ancient Windows vector file format, largely forgotten, but extremely useful in equally ancient Templot. This is a sample WMF file from TurboCAD, loaded into a picture shape: 2_061223_110000000.png The great advantage of a metafile is that it can be zoomed to any size and still remain as crisp lines: 2_061229_300000000.png A metafile is a small file and has almost no impact of the panning and zooming response on the trackpad. Using a CAD program or other drawing package, you can create it to any level of detail you wish. CAD programs can also export baseboard designs as a DXF file, which can be imported directly into the background shapes. ...

You would be using only a fraction of the capabilities of Templot, but it is a tool to be used in any way you wish. Most users of commercial track prefer to use programs designed for the purpose, such as AnyRail: http://www.anyrail.com although unlike Templot they don't usually allow for the chopping down of fixed pointwork.
