... now be the next pug but one, because I have committed to producing an interim pug as soon as possible with some basic user preferences saving. The main changes in the next full pug will be to the output options. In addition to the previous printed output there will be three new options: 1. output to PDF files, up to large sizes suitable for wide-format roll printing. 2. output to raster image files (GIF, PNG, BMP formats). 3. output to pages on the Templot Sketchbook. In addition any output can be in "diagram mode" or the existing "template mode". Diagram mode is a simplified output suitable for published track plans, signal box diagrams, control panels, and similar. None of these functions is yet finished, but I have made significant progress in recent weeks. Templot Sketchbook is new separate function within Templot -- almost a separate program in its own right. It's a mini desktop-publishing/drawing package, which will allow the creation of colourful layout plans, ...

... file, and allow double-track conflicts like this to be avoided: 2_040820_490000000.png At the same time I'm adding a similar function to draw a platform edge alongside a template. I know many users are waiting for this. To minimise changes to the generator engine, I'm deprecating the old adjacent tracks function. This will be available in future only via the program panel program menu, and if selected will replace the above functions in the generator. You can't have both at once. I have also been working this week on the Sketchbook feature. After much head scratching I have finally beaten the Windows metafile functions into submission. The base track plan can now be inserted either in raster format (bitmap) or in vector format (metafile). The latter provides much improved zooming and printout. It also provides an EMF file in passing, which can be opened in most photo editor programs, and then re-saved in GIF or PNG format (or JPG if you must). This means I no longer need to provide a separate raster image output ...

... ask me then this software that Martin has spent a vast chunk of his life devoted to is an extremely powerful application, it's the sort of software that in reality would need months of training on like CAD software. People pay a hell of a lot of money to go on long courses just to learn CAD programs such as Autodesk Autocad. Sure as hell Autocad is built to be 'like windows' products! I much rather Martin spent his time upgrading the program in the way he sees fit, I'm waiting patiently for the sketchbook upgrade personally, which I'll find a heck of a lot more useful than worrying about whether Martin had taken out 2 extra clicks from boot up. Has anyone actually asked for anything new? Martin has on several instances above told of ways to do things, that have since been oh but I want than done automatically. ... . The rest are nice features but I'm not too bothered if they go. However DXF Import and Export are the two features of Templot that should be retained to interact with other CAD software. Perhaps other CAD formats could be considered? Hi Jonathan, Many thanks for your comments. I've no plans remove any of these features. But I am interested to know which of them are deserving of further attention in line with other developments, and which can be left as they are. For example I am currently working on the Sketchbook feature. At present this is entirely uni-directional -- Templot data can go on the sketchbook, but as yet there is no data transfer in the other direction. It would seem useful to be able to use the spacing ring tool for example on the sketchbook -- but it's complicated and not worth bothering with if hardly anyone actually uses the spacing ring! Spot zoom essentially repeats the mouse wheel zooming, but with greater precision. It's also useful for those users without a mouse wheel. There is an alternative ...

... well aware of that. It is however, the best I can manage. I have started improved systems from time to time -- the most recent is the embryo A-Z Index at: http://www.templot.com/forum_index/ But that again has not moved for months because such work is simply too time-consuming. My priority is to complete the missing parts of the program -- irregular diamonds, gaunt turnouts, split deflection switches, flat-bottom foot lines, pdf output, raster output, the sketchbook feature, saving settings... and only then to write a proper set of docs. Until then it is wasted effort because so much will need repeated revision. As to time scales, a release every 2 years is frequent upgrading. I started this project over 30 years ago in 1979. The first public release was version 0.39 and we have now reached version 0.91. I would also add that the price of Templot has remained unchanged for 10 years, and every single upgrade has been free to existing users, ...

... issues with the later versions of AutoCad. Text-mode DXF is simple, free, universal, and can be edited in any text editor. The only disadvantage is the large file size, but the files can be zipped much smaller. I've no plans to support any other CAD-specific format in Templot. However, the next version will be able to export in PDF and EMF vector formats -- both of which most CAD programs can import. And EMF/WMF import from CAD will be available in the new Sketchbook feature in Templot. regards, Martin. posted: 13 Jul 2010 00:59 from: Martin Wynne David Yates wrote: If it helps at all the layout as drawn is fitted on a base board which is 4572 mm long by 1366 mm wide maximum. If we could have a library of GIFs of this calibre available to sketchboard* users, I'm sure we could see some really attractive track plans being produced. I was very pleased about the irregular diamonds and I have used it many times now. As Paul said it just works so I never had any questions to ask. Sketchbook I don't use. I suppose if I were beginning now I feel I would like to be told right at the beginning that it is not toy trackwork and I would also like to be told that the programme is about producing a model representation of real trackwork. That therefore tells me right at the beginning if all I want is to stick Peco toy track down this programme is not for me.
