... topic: 261 Soddingham-under-Piddle posted: 25 Nov 2007 02:00 from: BeamEnds Hi folks, attatched is product of a derranged mind. I wanted to model in 0, but not having space for a tail-chaser (without going through into next doors loft) and definately not wanting yet another MPD I came up with this. There's no way I'd ever have been able to contemplate anything like this without Templot- cheers Martin. The "rationale" (if that's the word!) is at http://home.btconnect.com/soddingham Critiques welcome (I bet Martin spots the major deliberate mistake first), as are drawings of 1980's vintage colour light signals. I know the shoving of timbers isn't finished yet, and the points are a mish-mash, but that will be sorted out. Soon. Honest. ... topic: 1266 Soddingham-Under-Piddle 2- The Sequel posted: 7 Oct 2010 12:34 from: BeamEnds Hi all, here's the lastest version of Soddingham-Under-Piddle- it's now shrunk to a 11' x 2' plank. It started out as a serious go at modelling Mells Road (between Frome and Radstock) circa 1980, but, well, you know.... So now it's entirely fictional, but the same general area and period. The sidings are the font of the layout. Because I like signals, the four roads at the back are infact four single line branch lines. The two rearmost ones will disappear into bridges/tunnels so things can be hidden there temporarily, the other two branches just disappear into the wall, also through bridge/tunnel mouths. There will be a platform against the road between the two rearmost branches, with a signal box above (because I fancy doing all the point rodding) as the layout is cut into the side of a hill for some reason ...

... were less than statisfactory over time on previous layouts, leading to derailments. My plan was to cut the rail with my "indusrtrial strength" Dremmel type tool with a very thin blade then fit false fishplates to "hide" the gap (both rails, obvioulsy, for realism). I think I might have to resort to my old tactic using a pair of long thin screws in the baseboard with the rail soldered to them with the cut in between- ballast can be good camoflage! Avoiding section breaks on curves on Soddingham is going to be tricky! Anyway, thanks again for the replies all, at least I've avoided a mistake I was going to make. I might even be able to provide photograhpic evidence of real (as opposed to virtual) progress soon- Dust Mat Dan the chippy needed some bits for his Landy so the baseboards are on their way! Now DCC or not.... (no- don't answer that! Really.) Cheers Richard posted: 21 Feb 2008 00:43 from: Paul Boyd Hi ...

I like the planing of the wing and checkrail ends. Just a couple of small concerns- are you sure that the check rails are long enough? I would have expected them to cover 5 sleepers rather than just three. Also, it looks like you have taken both the point and the splice rails to the point of the vee, whereas on the prototype, the blunt nose was formed entirely in the point rail as per this illustration from Martin... gallery/2 ...

... topic: 2479 Soddingham-under-Piddle (again....) posted: 1 Jul 2014 18:07 from: BeamEnds With Ubuntu closing the Unbuntu-One cloud site I've had to move a lot of files around, and came across the original Soddingham Templot file. Since O is out of the question on cost I started reading up on P4 and wondered what I could do in the space available 4mm. Why not OO?- well after O OO track just doesn't look right, both the gauge and the over-wide 6ft. Reading up on P4 suggested that 1000mm (~ 4ft) would need to be the minimum radius so more out of interest in Templot that anything else I bunged the 7mm plan into Templot and converted it to P4. It worked almost perfectly- only the single-slip, at 11ft by 12ft on the plan, needed anything more than tiny adjustments to length and/or curve. Half of the slip went over length and needed a bit of surgery to make it fit. Having fount ...

... topic: 1339 Flat Bottom Points In A Yard posted: 17 Jan 2011 12:48 from: BeamEnds Hi All, due to the change of plan the sidings at Soddingham are going to have mostly flat bottom rail( 'coz I've already got some!). The question is: would points in the yard have plained or bent check rails/vee ends? (It's safe to assume that these have been re-laid pretty recently). This photo shows bent ones on a main line Bent Check Rails, but then it is generally assumed that all flat bottom points have plained ones. Clearly the assumption is no wholly correct, does anyone have a photo of a set of points in an early 80's yard with bent ends? I just want to be able to say to any nit-pickers that bent ends are, or aren't, ok. The reason I ask is that plained ends don't somehow look right in sidings. The second question is: can Templot change an existing template from bullhead to flat bottom? And finally, ...

I've alreadt built 4 Parkside kits, a PGA brass kit, and the Class 42/43 Warship is ready to start building. Sadly my off-years brass kits have suffered too much to recover, but will feature parked up on Cripple Creek- the sidings for wagons waiting to go to Marcrofts from Soddingham-Under-Piddle, my space-time continum version of a Frome North "might-have-been". I have a fantasy history for the layout so that everything can be, cough, "justfied" (though my desire to build an EM2 requires some further thought...)- I'll put it on my "free" BT web space when I remember the password, with the Templot drawing etc. I did have a fancy to make the layout exhibitable (it certainly will up to standard ...

It was the V crossing rails- but I see that the "Half Diamond Check Rail" doesn't shorten the checkrails below an angle of 1:6, and I've found if I do a "B6 turnout reset", and then start from there it worked out all fine! I was going to post again, but got dragged out. A mouse action for the checkrails would be good Thanks Richard. posted: 25 Mar 2008 04:07 from: BeamEnds I had a similar hiccup with my single slip (see Soddingham thread), for some reason the V check rail on the bottom half of the diamond that the slip is based on would not respond to the "shorten for slip" menu item. Not a show stopper, so I didn't raise it as a bug, plus I'd been messing around with the slip for ages so I've probaby done something daft. I'd not had this happen pre the lastest release, but that could be a red herring. Cheers Richard Parts of Templot Club may not function unless you enable JavaScript ( ...

Sorry to bump this topic up. After life's little roller-coaster ride into unemployment and full-time caring over the last couple of years I got to a point where I really do need to build a layout for the rolling stock I've made. Circumstances decree that Soddingham-under-Piddle is going to have to shrink somewhat into an 11' x 2 plank. As I need to keep an eye on the pennies and actually have some time to make things, can I ask if, in addition to Martin's 7mm 'standard' Peco points, anyone has templates for the new curved points, the double slip and diamond. As long as they take up the same space, so to speak, that will do, I'm not looking to match the sleeper spacing and such, just have ...
