... of an Alan Gibson framed Midland 0-6 -0T. All 6 wheels are sprung and I endlessly fiddled with spring tension and freedom of movement of each axle box, then found that there was insufficient side play on the centre axle in one direction as it was hitting the gearbox, etc etc. The locomotive runs pretty well everywhere without problems now, but it was yet another time when 0 gauge was looking very attractive. Unfortunately 0 gauge takes up too much room and is just too expensive for me. So I soldier on with 4mm, although must say that when things finally work, one does feel a very definite sense of achievement (and relief!) Sorry, perhaps I have digressed! But I think I was just trying to say that getting the trackwork right is only one part of the equation in achieving reliable running. ... 4 Dec 2007 04:31 from: Raymond Gibson Although I still have a very large Bridport (I used to do really big stuff, in the days when time was plentiful) I use jigs supplied by the ScaleSeven Society (Charles, you do not say what scale you work in but, presumably, other similar Socieites would produce the equivalent). Because steel is hard work to file, I take off the maximum with the a hand machine like the Dremel, then fine finish with hand files. "Onward Christian Soldiers" provides a good rhythm (& is just as good when walking up Cornish hills); but, probably, my favourite would be Cesar Frank's "Le Chasseur Maudit" (those Hounds of Hell provide a good stimulant to push on with the job Raymond. posted: 4 Dec 2007 12:04 from: Charles Orr Thanks for all these replies. Steel boxcars were introduced in the late 1930s and early 1940s so there would not be that many around to start with and given materials priorities caused by WWII the wood cars would have soldiered on. Major replacement began after the war. ... from: rynd2it Hi Derek, I actually do have two computers (not set up but do-able) however I think my level of personal understanding of the why's& wherefore's of track planning is the underlying problem. I have watched the video a couple of times and I found myself asking "OK but why?" as each action unfolded. A commentary or a script for this video would be a great help. But as Martin is redoing the video anyway I guess we'll have to wait for that luxury I will soldier on- I only need one three-way on this layout and I'm a long way from any start date for building. Thanks to all David DerekStuart wrote: Hello David If you have two computers at home, I can thoroughly recommend having one running Templot and one running Martin's tutorial. ... out" like a library book, by one person, it becomes unavailable, or read-only, to everyone else. But that clearly requires that the files are kept on a common network system somewhere, rather than locally. It occurs to me more often than is comfortable, that Templot is such a textbook example of how NOT to write a computer program, that no self-respecting IT professional is willing to have his or her name anywhere near it. So we are left with just me and the brave to soldier on. I'm happy to change user names on here to an anonymous nickname if anyone so wishes.
