... topic: 1100 Birmingham New Street Station Layout Plans c1938 posted: 8 Apr 2010 15:53 from: Brian Nicholls Hi All, I am trying to obtain the layout plans of Birmingham New Street Station circa 1938 (or would be happy with plans between say 1934 to 1950 since, I believe the layout remained fairly constant throughout that period except for bomb damage and subsequent repairs). I am seriously considering this as a project modelled in P4 fine scale prototypical. I have already contacted Jim Smith-Wright whom you may know from P4newstreet.com. Jim has modelled a very fine example of this station in it's current modern state (electrification and all), and as I said to him, I really admire his attention to detail on the model. Jim stated that he new little of the older station (prior to the 1964 re-construction) but has kindly offered some drawings and information on certain parts of the station that have remained, relatively speaking, as was. However, my main stumbling block is I have no track or building layout ...

... seem a pretty thankless task. A combination of circuit drawings and wiring lists is a good starting point. My preferred wiring method relies on soldered tag strips which can be numbered. A list of connections between tags, the colour of the wires and the function of each wire helps fault tracing. Colour coding is also very helpful as you are doing. Standardisation of repeating circuits is a good idea. Make a record of the wiring through connectors between baseboards pin to tag strip each side. The wiring record for my layout Green Street eventually had to be kept in a lever arch file as there was so much of it, but then the wiring for it did become somewhat complicated by the design spec. Indeed much of the documentation for the wiring was done before the actual layout wiring was commenced and I still ran out of spare solder tags on occasion as new functions were added in the light of experience. I'm sure however, you will have another option available for me in Templot, which I yet need to discover (showing my ignorance again). I agree with your point about the dynamic stresses not being as severer at the throat of the station, where the speed of trains is much slower than that of the faster main running line junctions, in my case for New Street, the throat speed is limited to 10 mph and in the station area it slows to 5 mph for the very curved areas (mainly the Midland side of the station as it was commonly known). Not sure that would work the way they have built housing estates in the last 50 years and it is quite common to see estates with cul-de-sacs number the houses sequentially down one side and back along the other. I have some Easy Street Track (now renamed Electric Avenue) from the Proto:87 Stores and although Andy provides some example files to print out for this product, designing a complex piece of trackwork would be easier by using Templot I reckon, especially in a different gauge. It's based on platforms 1, 2 and 3 of Manchester Central (mirrored) and the general idea is that if the terminus was always smaller, so perhaps it wouldn't have shut, and survived through to the 1980's. I'll have to dispense with the big overall roof, although I'll have platform caponies (similar to those that were at the end of the platforms of the real thing), the station building will be a two storey brick affair, rather than the temporary wooden buildings, and finally a simple signal box rather than the one that spanned the tracks. Services are multiple units to Chester (Northgate) and Liverpool (Lime Street), with a "clubman" like morning and evening service of loco hauled+ stock to Liverpool. The attempt covers a small area of Birmingham New Street Station and is a formation just to the South West of signal box 4 located on the old Midland Railway side of the station. The formation is made up of exit roads from platforms 5& 6, plus exit roads from the old Fish Siddings( I posted a JPEG photograph of this area a few weeks ago, however, do NOT use the photo as background as it is quite distorted due to whatever reason). After several aborted attempts, mainly due to my lack of knowledge and understanding of Templot, and also trying to overlay templates on the partial plan area in some sort of sequence, I eventually came to the conclusion that a new tack was required. I then decided to overlay simple plain track templates on to the plan, putting ...

In an earlier reply you asked for other peoples experiences with track laying, so here goes although some of my experiences appear counter to yours. On the first P4 layouts I was involved with, the track was layed the traditional way, ie, a layer of PVA, track positioned and ballasted whilst still wet. One major drawback only became apparent when we started running trains, the noise transmission. When I started Green Street with the Central London Area Group (CLAG), we decided to investigate the causes of this and quickly came to the conclusion that any mechanical connection between the track and the baseboard allowed the sound to be transmitted to the latter. The most successful decoupling we produced was using one of our members pullovers as underlay, hardly practical! At the time Ray Hammond was using a different system of building his track on shellaced card which was then only fixed down to the baseboard along the edges, effectively a floating track system, ...

The only compromises to the original layout are: 1) the bottom left of the plan (in reality this the bottom two exit tracks cross on an acute diamond, but I needed an easy exit for the traverser/ cassette fiddle yard) 2) the turntable is moved slightly right (to avoid straddling a baseboard joint) 3) the crossover between the up and down main (centre left of the plan) has been moved slightly to the right towards the diamond crossing, also to avoid a baseboard joint 4) The top left exit from the goods sidings is a single slip (in reality it is a really like a three way overlaid on a diamond! ...

After some further investigations, I was satisfied, as it was verified that the station layout remained in that state up until during and just shortly after WW2, when subtle changes were made to the layout, culminated in the usual plans c1950, we see in books today. Whilst at BCL I took more than a hundred photographs of these plans and many other documents of interest. After some six weeks, and much negotiation, since my visit to BCL, I have finally ...
