... topic: 1876 Trax3 on Mac and Linux posted: 19 Mar 2012 17:56 from: Martin Wynne Following my experiments with Templot on Linux+ Wine I have been doing the same with Trax3. It works fine, although with the same small font for the menus and dialogs. This is Trax3 on Ubuntu running under Wine: 2_191241_190000000.png This is a great way to run Trax3 if you have a Mac or Linux computer, because you don't need to buy a copy of Windows or have any Microsoft code on your system. For Linux it is all entirely free and easily installed. On a Mac it is probably better to use the inexpensive installer from Codeweavers Crossover: http://www.codeweavers.com regards, Martin. ... topic: 2473 Trax ::: Templot posted: 28 Jun 2014 09:56 from: Jack Belgium Hi I'm new to Templot and am a bit out of phase. I recently purchased Trax3 and have encountered some frustrating issues. After writing to the editor, Noodle Books, I've been directed to Templot. My questions are: What is the connection between Templot and Trax? How do I post a question on the discussion group? Best regards from Belgium Jack posted: 28 Jun 2014 12:08 from: Martin Wynne Hello Jack, Welcome to Templot Club. There is no direct connection between Trax and Templot. Trax (currently Trax3) is a paid-for computer program written by Jeff Geary and available on CD from Noodle Books: http://billhudsontransportbooks.co.uk/selected-product.php?pid=3521 Templot (currently Templot2) is a computer program written by me and available as a free download: http://templot.uk The programs are not directly comparable. Templot2 contains many more track design functions than Trax3. Against that Trax3 ...

Yes, Trax3 runs fine on Windows8 and Windows8.1 If there is any problem it will be with the installer program rather than the Trax3 program itself. In which case install it on an older computer and then copy the entire Trax3 folder to your Windows8 computer. Unfortunately Trax3 is available only on CD, not by download, so on tablet systems without a CD drive that is the only way to do it. regards, Martin. posted: 24 Nov 2014 22:26 from: davidbristow Hi Martin Many thanks I can go and buy it now! ... LSWRArt wrote: I do not know how much it cost in the past to buy so do not have any guideline as to prices? Hi Art, A standard licence for Templot was £46.50 downloaded. It had been at that price for over 10 years until last month. For comparison, here are the approximate current download prices of some other model track software: 3rd PlanIt $125= £80? WinRail £50 and £70 S21-ModellGleis E64= £55? Cadrail $68= £45? AnyRail £35 Trax3 £17.50 (including signalling book) XTrackCad free None of these are directly equivalent to Templot of course. The only two which are suitable for handbuilt track construction are S21 and Trax3. There have been several generous donations today, for which many thanks. I wasn't expecting donations from users who have already paid for Templot, so such votes of thanks are much appreciated. Thank you. It does feel odd and a little uncomfortable to be in effect asking for money. Almost like standing in the street cap in hand. ...

... I made no attempt to follow Windows conventions because at the time I had no idea what they were (and wasn't very impressed when I found out). I was simply faced with a brand new unknown computer and a program which I wanted to make work on it. Nothing much has changed in the subsequent years and isn't now likely to. There are others with more Windows software experience who have written similar programs, and clearly if full Windows compliance is important those could be used instead. For example Jeff Geary has created Trax3, and there is S21 ModelGleis from Bernd Steimann and Christian Sender. However, I don't believe Templot is difficult to use provided you don't start off expecting it to be something which it isn't. In the early days most folks had much smaller screens, and keeping as much of it as possible clear for track design was important. So for example the mouse action panel can be hidden from view if it is in the way (the Delete key toggles it, or simply click on it), but the action information ...

... :38 from: madscientist Hi folks. I wonder if I could pick your experienced brains I've my initial layout design of Claremorris station in Ireland, based on the the trackwork 1960 -2000, this is a 5 road single track junction with about 35 points( excluding fiddle yards etc) I'll be doing the point work in copperclad, as I've a good bit of experience of it and I'm using OO -SF. Plan track will be Smp or C&L /exactoscale etc The base layout was built up,in trax3 to get a feel for the space needed and the compromises etc. Now that I basically comfortable with Templot. I intend to lay the whole of the visual trackwork up in templot. Questions( a) should I start by laying out all the plain track in Templot( 6 parallel roads, a diverging twin track throat etc) and then" insert" the crossovers and other turnouts. Or( b) start with the central track work and proceed to work left and right adding turnouts as I go etc. This ...

... p.w. engineer building a real railway, not someone assembling a model railway. For that you need a program such as AnyRail or XTrackCad instead. I will make a bit of video shortly. regards, Martin. Thats a bit harsh, actually I'm getting on great with Templot, and have now done all the combinations i need in the" real" layout. from reading around actually most uses dont use Templot to plan the layout but in fact use it to just print" templates" i do the design up in Trax3 first anyway to do rough sizing, the correlation between it and templot isn't bad at the end of the day I have to solder track that has to fit on a baseboard, that means it goes around 90 degree bends, even if Network Rail frowns on me. re the video, I just saw an old one, that creates an easement, then swings in 45 degrees then mirrors it.
