... topic: 1988 Hiding the control template when storing posted: 18 Jun 2012 02:44 from: Martin Wynne I've felt for some time that it's confusing for beginners that the control template is hidden on doing a store& background (INSERT key). The effect is that the template has simply changed colour, rather than been stored. We can't not hide the control template on store, otherwise it's not apparent to beginners that anything has happened at all. I've now made a change which I've been intending to try for some time. The control template will remain hidden only briefly, and will then reappear over the background template. You can of course hide it again if you wish (HOME key). For more experienced users there is a new option not to have the control template hidden. It's on the options menu on the storage box. Untick this menu option: 2_172050_560000000.png This setting is included in the program preferences. Note that even with this option unticked, on a large track plan the control template will disappear momentarily while Templot re ...

Every time I select track to the control another blue ghost appears below, sometimes having to delete many background ghost images prior to being left with the one I'm working on. Probably not explained that very well but an example would be- if I create a new template of any piece of track it appears on the trackpad in brown and is 'in the control', I click 'shift' and move it but there is always another 'blue ghost' left behind identical to the template I've just created. It's annoying the hell out of me as I seem to spend wasted hours just deleting blue ghosts- can I prevent it happening please. Returning to the last images on screen is not an issue, but when I get there I may not be able to recall which version I was working on. I've searched high and low, but can't find a place where the file name appears on screen or within the menu items. I'm guessing it is there somewhere but blowed if I can find it. This then continues into printed items where I may end up with several templates taped together of various versions and it would be really useful if the file name appeared somewhere on the printed sheets. Apologies again, if it is there and I'm having a senior moment.... I've looked at the videos and it all seems too easy, but reality is different to what is shown on some of the videos. for instance, I make a simple curved crossover on double track. I then try to modify one of the turnouts to get an easier radius, but then another turnout appears at random on the overall plan. I then find I can't print the original crossover, despite going into the template store; there's no print box shown. The strange thing is, that after all the clamour for them, they now hardly get a mention on here. So either the demand wasn't really there, or I got them just right first time -- which is difficult to believe. The same goes for several of the other new features -- platforms, gaunt turnouts, wrapping a picture shape along the control template, foot lines on FB templates, the dummy vehicle tool. Welcomed at the time, but since then -- silence. I can't believe they are all working so well first time that no one has anything to say about them. It's fairly easy to create a 3D model of the timbers in CAD from any Templot template. It's also fairly simple to drag models of the chairs into the correct positions and orientation and combine them to produce an STL file to drive a printer. What is not so easy is producing 3D models for chairs that a) actually work, and b) don't look too horrible! I think I have reached a point where I'm limited by the printing technology itself. The results are actually a lot better than I thought they might be when I started out. Anyway, I've been making some wild guesses about chair dimensions, and I have not had a lot of luck finding anything on the Web. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I understand that there is one control template that is the target of most commands. I sort of understand this as the 'foreground' template, while the others are 'background'. It's the template being controlled, I guess? Anyway, one selected template makes sense, but the sense of 'control' seems backwards. It's not controlling anything, it's the one being controlled and manipulated. But the way the 'xxx to the control' functions work isn't penetrating my brain. I've felt for a long time that this area needed changing, without knowing quite what to do about it. Following this recent discussion by Richard and Arthur: topic 370- message 14648 I have been giving it some more thought. I've made some changes for the next program update, although I'm still not entirely sure it is an improvement. Maybe it is just change for change's sake. At present the template number simply represents its position in the storage box list, so the number changes as templates are inserted, deleted, etc., or the list is re-ordered on the storage box. This involved determining the position of turnouts and once happy, sticking the templates to a large roll of paper and penciling in the plain track. Only partially complete, it is a very time consuming process and mistakes/alterations take a long time to redraw (especially if the paper is damaged when removing a previously stuck sown template). All of my turnout templates were obtained from the EMGS and C&L. The C&L templates include an outside single slip with crossing angles of 1 in 4.5 and 1 in 6.5. If possible I would like to attempt a draft of the trackwork in templot to assess the feasibility of the layout in terms of space and geometry.
