... topic: 1199 Difficulty getting started posted: 11 Aug 2010 20:32 from: roythebus Well, I suppose it's me either being too old to learn, or having a blonde year, but having spent ages trying to master Templot, I can't even get the crossover I've just drawn to print. I was hoping to be able to rebuild my current layout more prototypically using Templot, but personally I find it extremely complicated to use. I've looked at the videos and it all seems too easy, but reality is different to what is shown on some of the videos. for instance, I make a simple curved crossover on double track. I then try to modify one of the turnouts to get an easier radius, but then another turnout appears at random on the overall plan. I then find I can't print the original crossover, despite going into the template store; there's no print box shown. Has anyone yet written an idiots guide to Templot yet, or is there anyone out there who fancies doing a rather large layout plan? I ...

... topic: 1126 Coding in progress... posted: 18 May 2010 18:50 from: Martin Wynne Most of this topic is obsolete. Irregular diamond-crossings are now fully supported in Templot2. Check rails are adjustable by mouse action in Templot2. I thought I would start a topic where I can report occasionally about what I'm currently working on in Templot. Comments and suggestions welcome, but don't leave it too long or I may have moved on to something else. I'm minded to stop using the term "irregular" diamond-crossing because it has the potential to be confused with an error condition. Instead I'm thinking of calling them "curviform" diamond-crossings. We can't simply call them "curved" because of course a regular diamond-crossing can be curved. Comments welcome: Make Ladder Crossover A ladder track is one which crosses running lines diagonally, comprised of a string of diamond-crossings and/or slips. The sketchboard function took months of work and a considerable expense for the licence for the graphics engine. But only a few sketchboard screenshots have been posted here or on any other forums. Only a tiny handful of sketchboard SK9 files have been attached here for comment. Was I wasting my time? And if so, where to next? There are several extra functions I would like to add for my own use, but is Templot already too complicated for most users? Should I be looking at a "Lite" version where users can select pictures of A5s, B6s, etc and simply click them together? Should I provide a way to work with non-adjustable Peco templates? To import plans from AnyRail? A general dumbing down of the whole thing? Your thoughts welcome. Which bits of Templot2 do you really like? Which bits have you not even looked at? Which bits would you do differently? regards to all, Martin. posted ...

That means it is now much cheaper in real terms than it was, despite the many new features introduced over that time. I've allowed this situation to develop because I'm very aware of the deficiencies in Templot as a proper software product -- especially with regard to the confusing mess the user documentation is in. New users have been starting with the 10-year-old version 074b, despite the availability of much improved later versions, simply because 074b is the only version with a reasonably full set of user docs. But I've reached the end of my tether in trying to explain this over and over again in emails to users, despite the fact that it is fully explained in my order confirmation letter. It's fairly easy to create a 3D model of the timbers in CAD from any Templot template. It's also fairly simple to drag models of the chairs into the correct positions and orientation and combine them to produce an STL file to drive a printer. What is not so easy is producing 3D models for chairs that a) actually work, and b) don't look too horrible! I think I have reached a point where I'm limited by the printing technology itself. The results are actually a lot better than I thought they might be when I started out. Anyway, I've been making some wild guesses about chair dimensions, and I have not had a lot of luck finding anything on the Web. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Or several panels? With 7mm dia LEDs, the closest track spacing to keep things looking clear is probably at 5mm centres. If your layout track spacing is 50mm, that means the scale of the mimic diagram is 1:10. So that would mean a diagram 450mm square. Which 800x400 isn't? Templot has a function to draw the track centre-lines only, at any width, irrespective of the gauge of the rails (and in the marker colours), which may help you make a panel. Can you post a screenshot of what you mean by jagged track edges? That may just be your screen resolution, it would print smooth.
