I think you need to step back a bit from worrying about the users of your software because if they want to use it they will adapt and learn. I don't think it will ever be possible to fully document Templot because of the nature of its subject. Permanent way engineers took years to master their craft in days past and all without computers. ... topic: 3120 additional beginner buttons posted: 3 Nov 2017 18:12 from: Martin Wynne Before making more beginner videos I thought a revamp to the beginner buttons would be helpful. I wanted to make them a bit more prominent and add a couple more. To keep within the 1024 width for small screens, that meant adding a second row. Which eats into screen space, but there is always a trade-off with any change. Most users now have larger screens than in the early days of Templot. I have moved all the functions which make changes to the control template to the bottom row: 2_031244_010000000.png The ROTATE button has been reinstated for those mourning its loss in version 215. Plus T|P for insert turnout/convert to plain track, and the ORBIT mouse action. This is more beginner-friendly than snake, because like roam it ignores the peg position. I retained the STOP button for the legacy videos, even though it is now duplicated on the mouse action panel. That left some space on the top ...

... had a form of its own. It seems a bit strange that showing switch info means you lose the template info. Or is that deliberate? Hi Graeme, The primary reason for changing anything was that child forms as we had them were taking focus away from the parent. So that any dragging of them or clicking on them prevented the parent functioning, such as running up and down the lists on the arrow keys. Having got the focus problem fixed, everything is working fine as before. So any changes now are additional functionality, not problem-fixes. The child data form as it stands is used for 4 different things: 1. clicking the info button on the storage box. 2. clicking the view button on the info_form (itself a child window). 3. clicking the show info button on the switch settings. 4. (new) clicking the information menu items on the background templates popup. To which we may now be adding an automatic .click if the data is already showing. I agree that it is not ...

It does not make sense to have 200 users successfully installing the latest update and 2 users having problems. I have spent the day worrying about this, and wondering if I have done something wrong in the installer. This is not fair. I have never set myself up as an expert on Windows or other people's computers. Sometimes the reports about what people are seeing on their computer screen are completely incomprehensible to me. Not for the first time I get the impression that the way I use my computer as an electronic workshop tool is completely different from the way most folks use their computer. Perhaps it shows in Templot. For example I have never used a computer for any corporate or business use. I have never used Office or Word or a spreadsheet. I ...

... In 4mm/ft scale, 18 inches scale is 6mm. So widening the default 6ft-way spacing of 44.67mm centres by 6mm takes it to 50.67mm, closely matching the "Peco standard" of 2-inch centres (50.8mm). This is sufficient for a running clearance on all but the sharpest model curves, and allows clearance for obstructions such as a signal post. These options make it easy to widen the spacing when needed and reduce it again when no longer needed, without going into the settings dialog. In addition there is now a warning for standard-gauge tracks if the spacing is less than the minimum 134 inches for 6ft way. This does not apply to narrow-gauge tracks. 2. ... would I turn this into a double slip? Hi Charles, Bullhead switch-diamonds usually have a single wide timber at the centre, carrying both sets of points (blade tips). The drive stretchers would usually be located on each side of the central timber. The switches always work together in opposition, so you can save some motor cost by arranging a rocking crank from a single motor. To make a double slip, simply repeat the process of adding a slip road, swapping the TCP and MCP positions for the additional slip switches. Also change the half-diamond settings for shortened check rails and extended timbers to those for a double slip. If you do any customizing, make sure the slip switches are far enough from the V-crossing to allow room for both points (blade tips) to stand open between the wing rail fronts at the same time. They normally move over together, but may need to be both open during testing and maintenance. regards, Martin. posted: 15 Apr 2013 07:47 from: Stephen ...

... find on the ground. None list a B-12. On the other hand, if you change the B-12 to a generic or curviform V-crossing, you hit a different problem -- there is no possible irregular half-diamond which can fit for the the 3rd V-crossing, hence the exception. For such a tandem it would be necessary to use a gaunt turnout instead for the 3rd crossing (as used in the double-sided tandems). Thanks for reporting this. I will put additional checks on the starting size in the next update, and do some more testing. If it seems that the no-fit exception will occur for reasonable turnout sizes, I will add a fresh block of code to switch to a gaunt turnout for the 3rd V-crossing. But a gaunt turnout won't fit for the shorter single-sided tandems, which is why they are using an irregular half-diamond. As I mentioned before I started all this, tandems are not simple. regards, Martin. posted: ...

Although the current file shows the layout built with 7 baseboards in a row, the intention is to have 4, 4ft boards and 1 3ft board (which are shown as track centre line outlines) then a trapezium shaped board which will reverse the layout in a "U" style followed by another 4ft baseboard- This is to allow maximum access when at home and during construction. When exhibited this additional trapezium shaped board will not be used but and an additional 4ft scenic board will be bolted on instead. Hopefully this makes sense from the attached pictures. (I notice the plan has changed slightly across these two pictures but is mainly there to show the two baseboard arrangements) The main design constraints of the layout is to utilise the space as much as possible, whilst still being able to operate the layout via the branch line road when at home. But it is equally possible that the design office would specify timbers for a curviform crossing in a complex formation at the actual required closed-up spacing. Which is straightforward enough, but would leave a large gap between the last such closed-up timber and the joint timber at the end of the vee rails. It's possible that this gap would be dealt with by shortening the vee rails, but that means a non-standard vee assembly which can't be replaced quickly when needed. An additional timber seems the more likely practice to provide full rail support. So in the next program update I have added a new option for this in the Templot timbering.
