... case SLIC3R. This takes the STL file of the model and slices into layers which are exported as a G-code file to drive the 3D printer. Yes, the printer prints a single horizontal layer (slice) at one Z axis height before moving on to the next layer. The layers are usually all the same thickness, but they do not have to be. It is possible to generate custom G-code that does it differently, but I suspect that would be a major undertaking. The big issue with additive printing is ensuring that a layer fuses properly with the previous layer. That's difficult enough in a single plane. Doing it in 3D motion is probably not impossible, but I suspect it would take a lot of experimentation to get satisfactory results. I probably only answered half your questions, so keep asking! The question I have is has anyone got any good ideas on logging wiring and how to keep a track of it all? At present I'm labelling each end of the servo wires going back to the boards with the turnout number and the track feeds are colour coded red and black. The crossing feeds to the micro switches are white. In addition I've printed out Templot plans of each baseboard at 20% of full size on A3 paper and have plotted the exact positions of all feeds along with turnout numbering, but still feel that I'm not doing enough to make fault finding later, as easy as I can? So before doing that, I want to clear the desk of some other ongoing tasks. The sketchboard is essentially a self-contained mini-program, so any problems there won't impact on the core working of Templot. It is also a very worthwhile addition to Templot. You can't create anything on the sketchboard which you couldn't do by other means, but doing it directly in Templot makes it much easier to change the underlying track plan design as you add the scenic details. Many users enjoy creating "what if" plans, and my feeling is that the sketchboard feature will prove very popular -- with or without irregular diamonds. I've also committed to doing something soon about saving user preferences. Not because I want to do it or think it's really necessary, but simply ...

As long as we keep the double junction in the fiddle yard rather than as part of the scenic section then we don't need to worry about appearances. We also need to bear in mind possible constraints with exhibition managers and keep overall dimensions as reasonable as possible. This means that I would like to be as tight as possible with the additional depth allocated to the new fiddle yard and as generous as possible with any new scenic sections. Another constraint to think about:- One of the design weaknesses of the current layout are the two short boards which the tandem turnouts sit on. Instead I'm thinking of calling them "curviform" diamond-crossings. We can't simply call them "curved" because of course a regular diamond-crossing can be curved. Martin, In no way should the word "irregular" bring to mind that an error condition exists. In its simplest sense it means not regular which I understand to be the correct meaning here. In addition, to anyone who has had the anything to do with TEMPLOT and has read the references in Templot Club and elsewhere, the term has a distinct meaning. ... the gauntletted track arrangement? I have not seen that before and was interested on what did what... Hi John, This historic viaduct is on the former GNR(I) north-south main-line in Ireland, linking Dublin and Belfast. When the viaduct was rebuilt in the 1930s the new narrower steelwork did not leave space for two tracks on the bridge. The up and down lines were gauntletted to avoid the need for points at each end for a conventional single track line. Which would have required the additional cost of building and staffing a signal cabin (not "box" in Ireland) at the north end of the bridge. Drogheda station is at the south end. Building the new steelwork inside the old ironwork allowed the line to remain open during the reconstruction. More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boyne_Viaduct Here are a couple more views showing the gaunt turnouts at each end, looking north. All these photos are from 1986.
