I can imagine some track handbuilders might want to chop this part off to re-use in other formations with larger radii and flatter crossing angles. There's a choice of left and right hand. It's clearly a flexible switch with solid blades, rather than the existing loose-heel stampings which I was expecting to see. It's unfortunate that they have gone for a machined notch in the stock rail and thick blade tips seemingly machined on the back only. And the switch tips shouldn't be in fresh air overlapping the toe timber. They might be able to fix that in production. Or it might be possible to trim them back. ... 13 May 2019 20:14 by Jim Guthrie posted: 13 May 2019 20:21 from: Martin Wynne Hi Godders, For a diamond or slip it's best to start with the vees, as Phil says. That's because they need to be exactly the correct distance apart, to allow the other rails to align correctly. That also means printing a template for exactly the gauge which you are using. In other words don't try to build 00-SF 16.2mm say, on a 16.5mm gauge diamond-crossing template. Or 0-MF 31.5mm on a 32mm gauge template. Print one for 00-SF or 0-MF, it will be a fraction shorter. For a regular-pattern V-crossing on a curve, both legs of the vee should be curved to the same radius. Curve them after making the vee, to match the template. It's worth printing a rails-only copy of the template on tracing paper or OHP film. That can be laid on the rail tops during construction to check the rail alignments. If ...

I don't have the book (I guess I should simply buy it!!!) so I'm grateful for the comment about equalised incremental sleepering, which is an easy change, I hope. What is not so easy is to elongate the blades- the layout is a classic quart in a pint pot, (please see link at http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/79052-porth-dinllaen-in-0 /page-5 #entry1723851- actually the previous page but the RMWeb server isn't serving at the moment) Moving the crossings relative to one another would allow an increase in the wing rail length as suggested, but this is back to the track layout itself. Ideally, an extra foot between the lounge door and the end wall... In any case, I will make the wing rail as long as I can without fouling the flangeway of the middle road. ... fitted with Proto87 wheels. If you want to use a flangeway gap of 0.86mm, presumably in order to use some other existing wheels, then it becomes impossible to follow the prototype drawings exactly. And if you depart that far from the prototype on the flangeway, it makes sense to be more flexible on other dimensions too. Generally when using wider than scale wheels, such as commercial RTR wheels, it is necessary to reduce the track gauge in order to fit the wheels within a scale model. Hence 00, EM, 0-MF, etc. In which case I would suggest a track gauge of say 11.0mm rather than your strict 11.53mm dimension. Then in copying a prototype track plan, the usual practice is to stick to the prototype crossing angles as far as possible, but accept whatever changes in radius, lead length and switch openings are needed to suit the adopted model track standards. In the classic 3-throw design, each switch consists of one long switch blade, and one short one. Here is the GER drawing of such: 2_280950_180000000.jpg In Templot it would need to be assembled from partial templates. It's doable, but I'm not convinced it could be built reliably in GOG-F.
