... topic: 2452 GOG-F slip crossover for Steve Rowe posted: 6 May 2014 13:57 from: Martin Wynne Hi Steve, Here is your curved 1:8 slip crossover on 28700mm outer radius. I have done it in GOG-F 32mm as requested but you would get much better running, especially through the K-crossings, if you changed to 0-MF 31.5mm gauge. Excellent roller gauges are available from Debs of this parish. If you decide to change, do not use this template, ask me to create one for 0-MF. Diamonds and slips must be built on a template accurate to the gauge being used, because it changes the distance between the V-crossings. The PDF file attached below is for home printing on 5 sheets of A4 paper. Make sure you change to "no scaling, 100%" in your PDF reader program. You can check the accuracy by measuring the 150mm grid squares. Trim the pages to the red lines to fit them together. For best results use paper ...

... 13 May 2019 20:14 by Jim Guthrie posted: 13 May 2019 20:21 from: Martin Wynne Hi Godders, For a diamond or slip it's best to start with the vees, as Phil says. That's because they need to be exactly the correct distance apart, to allow the other rails to align correctly. That also means printing a template for exactly the gauge which you are using. In other words don't try to build 00-SF 16.2mm say, on a 16.5mm gauge diamond-crossing template. Or 0-MF 31.5mm on a 32mm gauge template. Print one for 00-SF or 0-MF, it will be a fraction shorter. For a regular-pattern V-crossing on a curve, both legs of the vee should be curved to the same radius. Curve them after making the vee, to match the template. It's worth printing a rails-only copy of the template on tracing paper or OHP film. That can be laid on the rail tops during construction to check the rail alignments. If ...

... fitted with Proto87 wheels. If you want to use a flangeway gap of 0.86mm, presumably in order to use some other existing wheels, then it becomes impossible to follow the prototype drawings exactly. And if you depart that far from the prototype on the flangeway, it makes sense to be more flexible on other dimensions too. Generally when using wider than scale wheels, such as commercial RTR wheels, it is necessary to reduce the track gauge in order to fit the wheels within a scale model. Hence 00, EM, 0-MF, etc. In which case I would suggest a track gauge of say 11.0mm rather than your strict 11.53mm dimension. Then in copying a prototype track plan, the usual practice is to stick to the prototype crossing angles as far as possible, but accept whatever changes in radius, lead length and switch openings are needed to suit the adopted model track standards. In the classic 3-throw design, each switch consists of one long switch blade, and one short one. Here is the GER drawing of such: 2_280950_180000000.jpg In Templot it would need to be assembled from partial templates. It's doable, but I'm not convinced it could be built reliably in GOG-F. At the very least I would change to 0-MF. Wider than scale model flangeways make it impossible to follow the prototype exactly. (0 -MF and GOG-F can be mixed on the same layout.) Both switches are loose-heel types, certainly the flexible "A" switch which you used for your left-hand switch would never be found in a 3-throw. The GWSG Book suggests that from 1910, Guard Rails on Crossings up to 1 in 7 were 11' 6" in Length with 4 Check Chairs. Guard Rails on Crossings over 1 in 7 were 14' 0" in Length with 5 Check Chairs. Studying Photographs of Moretonhampstead I found that the Crossings had just 4 Chairs on the Guard Rails. This, to me would suggest that the Crossing Angles in use at Moretonhampstead were less than 1 in 7. Splitting the exit crops the turnout template at those joints, so you are left with a gap in the crossover road. A. do this (for Templot beginners): 1. make the control on the outer turnout. 2. click the red peg indicator (top left of screen) to show 0 or press CTRL+ 0. 3. use F4 mouse action (or click the LENGTH button) to extend the length of the turnout until the gap is filled. There will now be an overlap on the exit track. 4. make the control on the exit track. 5. use CTRL+ F5 mouse action (or click the ORBIT button) to move it along to make a better join with the turnout.
