... topic: 3307 progress report- chairs in the output posted: 16 Jul 2018 20:34 from: Martin Wynne As I mentioned, the reports of folks using 3D printing to create bullhead chairs has spurred me to move chairing in Templot from the NOD* list to the to-do list. I started some experimental work a couple of years ago, and I have now returned to it. It seemed that if the output was to be of any use in 3D printing, the chair outlines would need to have the proper corner radii. It's a lot of extra calculation with 4 chairs on most crossing timbers, but it hasn't impacted too much on the screen response for full track plans. Obviously you would switch the chairs on only for the final printed templates, they are not needed while track planning. It's fiendishly complex. For example the REA bridge chairs (L1) have a larger corner radius (1.3/4 ") than ordinary S1 chairs (which have 1" corner radius): 2_161458_330000001.png And GWR slide chairs have a ...

... I'm progressing with building my Templot track layout of Claremorris in Ireland circa 1975-85. This will be all bullhead on wooden sleepers. I dont want to go to 21mm, as theres too much plain track to build( and stock to convert), so have decided to use 00-SF. its a decision I didn't take lightly what would people now consider as the pre-eminent way to build 00-SF points( I will use C&L for plain track). (a) Copperclad with half chairs( using vero pin to raise rail) (b) Brook-Smith, again with half chairs on ply (c) all plastic construction( how do we handle the lack of flange chairs etc) (d) ply and plastic chairs, again we have a lack of crossing chairs for 00-SF (e) Combinations Paticulary as copper clad is getting more and more expensive and actually looks like it will exceed the cost of ply sleepers any day now. It's fairly easy to create a 3D model of the timbers in CAD from any Templot template. It's also fairly simple to drag models of the chairs into the correct positions and orientation and combine them to produce an STL file to drive a printer. What is not so easy is producing 3D models for chairs that a) actually work, and b) don't look too horrible! I think I have reached a point where I'm limited by the printing technology itself. The results are actually a lot better than I thought they might be when I started out. Anyway, I've been making some wild guesses about chair dimensions, and I have not had a lot of luck finding anything on the Web. Any information would be greatly appreciated. It's not that I am really concerned about- no doubt I will be when I make it! The questions I'd most like help with are these: 1. Is the pcb/plywood construction combo in any way sensible? I've arrived at it because with plywood I can use proper chairs but with pcb under the vee I can fix this solidly (also I can't work out what chairs I would use to hold the vee). I realise that this might give me height problems on the un-chaired pcb, so the plywood sleepers are1.5mm thick and the pcb 1.6 2. What chairs do I need to fix the check rails in place? It all looked great until the night before our first show when we decided to slop on some paint and thinners gunk to stain the sleepers. ALL the glue melted and we had a panicked hour trying to simultaneously re-gauge all the track and hold it in position while the gunk dried. So this time in 0 gauge I have been building track with C&L plastic chairs on wooden sleepers. To avoid the risk of the same problem I thought I would do it the other way round. I found some almost black wood dye and put a few coats on the sleepers and then glued the chairs down.
