... topic: 2253 Brighton: struggling with a tandem turnout posted: 7 Jul 2013 19:34 from: TonyHagon I would be grateful for some help please.... I have been tearing what's left of my hair out with what should be a very simple set of templates... Six roads of the engine shed are fanned out from two sets of three way points and it's taken me days to work out the geometry. I have mastered one three way point (and discovered along the way that the OS map and what's on the ground aren't necessarily congruous! The OS plan shows the road passing the wheel lift straight, but photos show this to be S curved as I have laid them out here- I'm happy with the resulting templates) but the second one is eluding me. The problem is that the two turnouts seem to be S shaped as shown on this image...1876_071428_480000000.png Unfortunately, the water point icon hides the crossing point but the real problem seems to me the length of the lead in both turnouts. I have searched the previously posted topics on this subject and at this stage still need help on the following points. What is the difference between 3way and tandem turnouts? I'm sure I've seen this once but couldn't find the topic again to reread it. What suggestions can you make for deciding which turnout settings work together sensibly? All the examples I've seen are for the middle road being the main road. I'm particularly interested in curved turnouts where either of the outer roads are the main road. I haven't been able to work out how to achieve this. Ideally it would be nice to be able to:- Insert a turnout into a plain track aligned on the turnout road rather than the main road peg/align turnout over an existing turnout aligned on the turnout road rather than the main road. Possibly neither of the latter ideas are ...

My attentions are now on producing a small layout (12' x 16") using templot. I've played around a bit with templates and looked at a few of the tutorial videos but i've come a bit stuck with one (of many i'm sure) problem. I have two offset parallel straight sections separated by about 12". I want to join these with an s bend to form a single track and then add some turnouts along the length. My problem is joining the two sections with the s bend while maintaining the parallel straight section at the start and end of the track. I've tried transition curves (easement from straight) etc. but i always end up with a curve at the end or the straights not being parallel. I'm sure there's a simple solution, but i'm still trying to get my head around all the options and get lost so any pointers would ...

To the right are four tracks which are from the top: an Engineer's siding (previously access to the former Goods Yard); Platform 3 (the former down through platform); Platform 2 (the former up through platform); and Platform 1 (a bay platform). Starting at Platform 3 on the right, I need the toe end of the turnout to cross the baseboard joint at 90 degrees and since I am using pre-assembled common crossings from C&L (which are straight), I think this turnout is 'final'. If I reduce the radius any further then the diverging radius drops below 36 inches and I have a transition of zero length between this curve and the common crossing. I have then made an ordinary crossover at 44.67mm centres, which should provide the access to Platform 2. I'm not sure why it stops short of the baseboard edge at ...

I'm toying with ideas for a P4 test track and decided I should include a slip of some sort. Going for ease and aesthetic value, I opted for a 'double track with trailing connection to siding' sort of arrangement. Additionally I put the whole thing on a curve which transitions to straight track at each end. (the idea being that the test track can be tarted up and used as a photo plank as well). Due to the small size, one turnout and the slip lie within a transition. What I want is for the diverging route of the lower turnout to be completely straight, and I'd prefer a B8 (ish) or something that doesn't require a switched diamond within the slip. I ...

Initially we were able to use Peco's turnouts, Y's and flexitrack for the trackwork, but then as confidence quickly grew, and plans became more complex with crossings, curved switches and three-ways they all turned to the club's 'Templot guy'. I said OK without question, as I had always been interested in the rustic look of these North American shortline railroads. With the minimum radius of 24 inches and 36 inches preferred it was all fairly straight forward --- until I had to work on a corner module with two existing Peco On30 switches, which had to remain in situ. So that's the backstory. Scale On30 16.5mm 1:48 I thought the easiest thing was to start to generate a Templot version of Peco's ...

I would like to set the desired route by entrance – exit route switching, in other words by pressing two buttons on a control panel. The selected route should be flashing until the affected turnouts are in the end position and then steady lighted. I have this kind of control panel already on the layout, for a small station with seven turnouts and nine routes. The electronic filled two euro cards with components. I think for these 102 routes it will fill several cake tins with components and it will be daunting complex. I have the idea that this could be made simpler with the usage of microprocessors.
