... topic: 2399 Dual Gauge Turnouts- Basic Principles? posted: 8 Feb 2014 21:17 from: Steve Bedding Hello Martin et al, I have been using Templot for a number of years for a several 2mm projects and although fairly happy that I can muddle my way through most simple tasks/functions, I have been asked to produce a plan for a 7mm dockside layout that incorporates both standard (SG) and narrow gauge (NG) lines; this has taxed my abilities beyond what I can achieve without guidance. I have searched the forums for any pointers/tips but can't seem to find a definitive tutorial or guide to the basic steps and principles to be followed; I would prefer to understand the sequence of producing the turnout rather than ask for a single solution as this way I can further my learning/understanding. My best guess is that the steps would be something along these lines... Created base turnout (standard gauge- GoG-F) which in this case is a GWR 9ft regular crossing v5. Store ...

Attached to this post is the box file and the next two posts contain the two screenshots at the time the issue occurred. I do hope I haven't done anything wrong this time The starting template was a 1:12 curviform turnout in a length of straight track and I just let Templot proceed through the process without any changes when asking for the tandem. I did have an issue earlier when a stock rail in the 2nd v-crossing was not lined up but the issue above occured when I was trying to re-produce it. I will let you know. ... Good morning chaps! I posted this question on RMWeb and Mr. Wynne suggested here might be more fertile ground for discussion. I've got a relatively simple arrangement of trackwork in my station throat, which I have divided for ease of construction into three meta arrangements of A, B and C: ATzhaRq.png I tink A and C are relatively straight forward- simple B6 crossovers though C has an extra B6 interleaved. The issue appears to be with the formation at B- as Martin has pointed, it is not possible for both turnout routes to be occupied simultaneously (in model form) without there being a conflict. Now, this isn't something that keeps me up at night: I'll be a sole operator and if not I find it hard to believe that this will be a frequent enough conflicting movement to cause problems (seeing as the bottom right road out of the junction is a carriage siding). I my opinion, the purpose of Templot is specifically so that you can design templates based on prototype track knowledge. If you don't have that knowledge, you can only use Templot as a generic template or layout design tool, and you're not making best use of it. For instance, I have layouts with all templates based on WC&PR trackwork from the early 1900s, or Festiniog Railway based on 1960s trackwork where I've actually gone and measured turnouts in detail, or GWR templates based on the GWSG book. You can only transfer all that into Templot- no other program that I'm aware of can give you that. I'm hesitant to say this, but if you just want to spend time making track then maybe Templot isn't for you. If you want to spend time making track that conforms to prototype standards, then Templot is for you. ... Rob Manchester Hi Martin, I think you are doing fine. I can appreciate the difficulties of pitching the information at the right level given such a varied user-base. A user who is new to any software must be prepared to practice, make mistakes and learn- that is how we live all of our life. Explaining the storage box concept is going to be a tricky one as you say. Understanding the concept of the control template and background templates is key to Templot, at least when you move past single turnout design. Are you able to have mouseover prompts for the menu when a user clicks on a background template? A quick prompt as to the use of the make, copy and delete etc may be handy before a beginner ends up with no templates left in the storage box( or duplicate copies of some). Just a thought- you could maybe have a prompt 'off' setting savable in stored preferences. Keep plodding through- the docs/videos will make a huge difference to Templot. Regards Rob posted: 29 ...

A few points: The real place is pretty straight through the station but to create sufficient space for the bay platform I have put in a transition curve after the curviform turnout from the mainline The yard is much shorter than in reality for the later yard with just two sidings. It is closer in length to the original yard with 3 sidings where one siding faced in the other (southerly) direction, like a headshunt?, towards the hamlet. The layout is limited to 600mm in length but the plan is more than 600mm long. The ends will protrude into the off stage area. I've left them a bit raggedy as that can be cleared up 'on-site'. Otherwise you would probably do better to use Templot templates. The C&L ones are probably quite close, although they will be for 32mm GOG-F whereas many track builders in 7mm scale have gone over to 31.5mm 0-MF. The upper turnout needs to fit into the pace as indicated. Looking from the switchpoints, the RH track is a 25.5" radius, the LH track is 48.7" radius: 632_010050_030000000.png The next Y is the one on the right of the top image.
