Beginners in Templot tend to go for the brick-by-brick approach, possibly using the F7 snapping function to "clip" individual templates together, in a similar manner to other track-planning programs. This method is simple and quick, but it can produce a disjointed "train-set" look if you are not careful. More experienced users prefer to lay out the broad sweep of the running lines first, and then insert the turnout templates in them (or align the templates over them). This is the classic way to use Templot and the most likely to produce a prototypical sweeping feel to pointwork. Or you can use whatever mixture of methods suits your own way of thinking and working. There are always several different ways to arrive at a similar result. I hope to attach a picture now or soon. The mainline sleepering goes in steps on this turnout, while the turnout road goes smoothly. Normally it's the other way round. ... please. There must be tools and techniques in there somewhere for "tidying up" a plan. The attached is based on a trackplan of Wantage, drawn by Barry Norman and published in one of the Wild Swan books. All of the fundamentals are in the right places (I'll post the background image separately as it seems that only one attachment can accompany each message) but I can't get it "tidy". There are two main issues that I'd like to solve.- I've designed it so that each of the turnouts have "link" pieces of plain tracks in between them, so that I can deal with it section by section. If you look, for example, at 15: Link Road, then I can connect it to a turnout at one end, but try as I might, I can't join it to the turnout at the other end. How do I do this?- when I have a number of link-turnout-link-turnout pieces joined together, how is it possible to (say) curve ...

When I start up, it shows me a curved turnout, which seems to be anchored to the bottom left hand corner of the screen. How do I move it to somewhere more useful (I've worked out how to change the shape of it). I did at one point (no pun intended) manage to delete it, but when I tried to place a piece of track, I only seemed to be able to align it with the line of the "branch" part of the now vanished turnout. One which is easy to overcome on an A5 turnout, is that at the heal end it is a Timber short. Another is that as the base has the same number of sleepers but as you would expect the length is 5 mm longer, which I believe is easy to overcome. ... time round, I built the points and crossings on top of my own scale drawings using various curved templates in the 24", 30", 36", 48", 60" radius with various frog angles. This time, I plan to use Templot to design the trackwork but I am at a loss to know which Switch Type& Crossing Angle to use when setting up at the beginning, as this layout is based on LPTB (ie pre London Underground). Looking at "Prototype pre-nationalisation bulkhead track turnout data" by Brian Oldford and Keith Norgrove (see http://www.clag.org.uk/protodata-bullhead.html) shows that the LPTB used a range of switch types and Crossing Angles ranging from A4 thru A8, B6 thru B11, C7 thru C14, D8 thru D12, E10 thru E16. How on earth does one work out which one would have been used for a particular switch/crossing? At the present, I am experimenting, using my existing 24", 30", 36", 48", 60 ...

Unfortunately I must be misreading something because I can't get this to work as it appears it should from the guidance notes. I've also read the recent exchanges re:Brighton tandems, but still can't work out what I'm doing wrong. I've positioned the peg using CTRL-F8 on the intersection of the two rails and put the notch on the peg. I've created a new template with the crossing at 1:12 (it's obviously going to be much more than that anyway), curviform, and gaunt options selected as per instructions. I then peg this to the notch (using the *multiply key). The notes then suggest using F6 to adjust the curvature to match the underlying template- but it's obvious that the control template is not aligned over the background template(s) at all ...

... , please? It's not one I've seen before. Hi Derek, "S1J" chairs are joint chairs. They have a wider base than ordinary S1 chairs, for use adjacent to rail joints. The rail is supported on the wider base as close to the joint as possible. The jaws are the same size as ordinary S1 chairs, so that the fishplates still fit between them. If you look closely in the NERA 1926 SRE book, you will see that S1J chairs are shown adjacent to the rail joints within some turnouts and other formations, and included in the parts lists. S1J also used at the ends of 60ft track panels in some cases. S1J chair drawing in the NERA book at page 5. In the drawing of a rail joint on page 1 (left middle), joint chairs and 12" wide joint timbering is indicated by dotted lines. ... where I got to around 4 years ago. I am basically at the stage of having to re-learn Templot almost from the beginning although I have followed the progress on the Templot Forum. The recent discussion on importing and using Maps as Background Shapes has also spurred me along. I did import a Map of Moretonhampstead that I copied from one of the many books that I have acquired. It compares reasonably well with the 25" Maps of the NLS. I'm not too sure if I have used the correct style of Turnout. The 1 in 8.25 RAM/ CLM seems an odd size E.g:- REA semi-curved C-size left-hand switch (unjoggled) 1 in 8.25 RAM( 1 in 8.28 CLM) regular V-crossing equalized-incremental timbering. Anyway that's where I am at. In P4 crossing a board joint at a skew angle requires some precision carpentry to avoid misalignments. A slight gap between the boards (due to an uneven floor perhaps) can be crossed square, but not at an angle. The first idea is to replace the slip road with a separate crossover, using a tandem turnout in the main: fremington1.png Pros: Maintains the existing run-round length. Tracks cross the joint square. Clear length in the platform road is increased a little while using the main road to head spur. Cons: The head spur for running round is very short, only about 12" clear. Just room for a loco only.
